Chinese Colors and Their Meanings in Chinese Culture<\/h2>\n

Lucky Red<\/h2>\n

\"Chinese
\nLet\u2019s start with the most popular and prominent color in Chinese culture\u2014red (\u7d05, h\u00f3ng).
\nWhen you think of Chinese New Year you think of red envelopes, red lanterns, red is everywhere. It symbolizes good luck and is traditionally a happy color, therefore strictly prohibited at funerals. Brides do wear red to ward off evil though.
\nRed is such a vibrant and powerful color, it also symbolizes vitality, celebration, and fertility. Keep in mind, too, that when you\u2019re picking up a pen to write a note or sign a card, be careful NOT to use red ink, because red ink is known to be used when writing the names of the dead. Naturally, red is associated with the element of fire.<\/p>\n

Black is King in Chinese Color Symbolism<\/h2>\n

Interestingly, black (\u9ed1, h\u0113i) corresponds with the element of water. While red is probably the most popular color, ancient Chinese people considered black the king of colors. However, today, it is associated with destruction, evil, disasters, and cruelty. The Chinese word for black, h\u0113i, stands for bad luck, irregularity, and illegality.<\/p>\n

Qing (Green\/blue)<\/h2>\n

\nQing (\u9752, q\u012bng), can be green or blue, depending on what noun it is associated with. For example, the word for sky is \u9752\u5929 (q\u012bng ti\u0101n), which then means sky blue. However, the color is more often associated with green, such as the words for grass, \u9752\u8349 (q\u012bng c\u01ceo), green mountains, \u9752\u5c71 (q\u012bng sh\u0101n), and green vegetables, \u9752\u83dc (q\u012bng c\u00e0i). It represents the element of wood and is associated with health, prosperity, and harmony. Think of the popularity and wide use of jade, that is highly valued.
\nThere are, however, specific words for green and blue. Green is \u7da0 (l\u01dc) and blue is \u85cd, (l\u00e1n).<\/p>\n

Yellow, the Most Beautiful Color of Them All in Chinese Culture<\/h2>\n

\nYellow, \u9ec3 (hu\u00e1ng) is the earth and is also a very popular color, probably seen and used as much as red, because it is considered the most beautiful and prestigious color.
\nIt is considered to generate Yin and Yang, meaning that yellow is the center of everything. It was once the emperor\u2019s color and is symbolic of the five legendary emperors of ancient China, the Yellow Emperor, Zhuanxu, Emperor Ku, Emperor Yao, and Shun. You will often find yellow in royal palaces, altars, temples, and also the emperor\u2019s robes and attire.
\nHowever, today the color yellow has developed an association with pornography. For example, the color yellow (\u9ec3\u8272, hu\u00e1ng s\u00e8), combined with the word for movie (\u96fb\u5f71, di\u00e0n y\u01d0ng) in Chinese, becomes pornographic movie .<\/p>\n

Some Chinese Color Grammar<\/h2>\n

Typically when writing Chinese colors you write the color and add the literal word for color, \u8272(s\u00e8). It\u2019s basically like saying ___-colored.<\/p>\n

Red – \u7d05\u8272, h\u00f3ng s\u00e8 (red-colored).<\/strong>
\nBlack – \u9ed1\u8272, h\u0113i s\u00e8 (black-colored)<\/strong>
\nQing – \u9752\u8272, q\u012bng s\u00e8 (green\/blue-colored)<\/strong>
\nGreen – \u7da0\u8272, l\u01dc s\u00e8 (green-colored)<\/strong>
\nBlue – \u85cd\u8272, l\u00e1n s\u00e8 (blue-colored)<\/strong>
\nWhite – \u767d\u8272, b\u00e1i s\u00e8 (white-colored)<\/strong>
\nYellow – \u9ec3\u8272, hu\u00e1ng s\u00e8 (yellow-colored)<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you want to describe a mixed color like blueish-green, you would just combine the colors and say \u85cd \u7da0\u8272 (l\u00e1n l\u01dc s\u00e8)
\nWhen using color as a adjectives to describe a objects, start with the color and add the structural particle \u7684 (de). So, if you want to describe the house as red, you would say \u7d05\u8272 \u7684 \u623f\u5b50 (h\u00f3ng s\u00e8 de f\u00e1ng zi). However, you can also drop the \u8272 (s\u00e8) and \u7684 (de), and just say \u7d05 \u623f\u5b50 (h\u00f3ng f\u00e1ng zi). Both ways are correct.<\/p>\n
