The list below shows the upper and lower case letters and their pronunciation. If you see two different pronunciations, it\u2019s due to the difference between European and Brazilian Portuguese.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>*Despite being part of the Portuguese alphabet, the letters K, W and Y are rarely used. Here are the most common ones:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>&#8211; CH<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; It has the same sound as in the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it can be used with any of the five Portuguese vowels.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples: <\/span><b>chave<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>cheiro<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>mochila<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backpack<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>cachorro<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>chuva<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>&#8211; RR<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; It has the sound of the letter H in the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
