The Alphabet Represents The Language\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Take a look at this letter: <\/span>\u00f1<\/b>. Doesn\u2019t the Spanish language or even a specific Spanish word come to mind? What about this one: <\/span>\u00df<\/b>? It\u2019s impossible to see the eszett<\/em> letter without relating it to the German language, right?<\/span><\/p>\n

Did you know that the same happens with Portuguese? For example, have you ever seen the letter <\/span>\u00e7<\/b>? Despite being used in other Latin languages, like French and Catalan, it is a widely used letter in Portuguese.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Portuguese Alphabet with Pronunciation<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Let’s learn the Portuguese alphabet and the sound each of its 26 letters makes. The list below shows the upper and lower case letters and their pronunciation. If you see two different pronunciations, it\u2019s due to the difference between European and Brazilian Portuguese.<\/span><\/p>\n

*Despite being part of the Portuguese alphabet, the letters K, W and Y are rarely used. You will mostly see them in proper nouns, such as the names of people and places, and in estrangeirismos<\/i>, which are words from different languages that Portuguese has adopted.<\/p>\n

\"Learn<\/a><\/h3>\n

Digraphs<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Another particularity of the Portuguese language is the use of digraphs, which are pairs of letters that form a different sound. Here are the most common ones:<\/span><\/p>\n

– CH<\/b> – It has the same sound as in the word <\/span>machine<\/span><\/i> and it can be used with any of the five Portuguese vowels.<\/span>
\nExamples: <\/span>chave<\/b> (<\/span>key<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>cheiro<\/b> (<\/span>smell<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>mochila<\/b> (<\/span>backpack<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>cachorro<\/b> (<\/span>dog<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>chuva<\/b> (<\/span>rain<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n

– RR<\/b> – It has the sound of the letter H in the word <\/span>help<\/span><\/i>. The same word can have different meanings if written with one or two letters R (<\/span>caro<\/b> means <\/span>expensive<\/span><\/i>, but <\/span>carro<\/b> means <\/span>car<\/span><\/i>).<\/span>
\nExamples: <\/span>guerra<\/b> (<\/span>war<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>correr<\/b> (<\/span>run<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>garrafa<\/b> (<\/span>bottle<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>horror<\/b> (<\/span>horror<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>correto<\/b> (<\/span>correct<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n

– LH<\/b> – It has the sound of the letters LL in the word <\/span>million<\/span><\/i> and it can be used with any vowel.<\/span>
\nExamples: <\/span>abelha<\/b> (<\/span>bee<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>colher<\/b> (<\/span>spoon<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>escolhido<\/b> (<\/span>chosen<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>trabalho<\/b> (<\/span>work<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>silhueta<\/b> (<\/span>silhouette<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n

– NH<\/b> – It has the sound of the Spanish letter <\/span>\u00f1<\/span><\/i> or like the letters NY in the word <\/span>canyon<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>
\nExamples: <\/span>ninho<\/b> (<\/span>nest<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>sonho<\/b> (<\/span>dream<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>amanh\u00e3<\/b> (<\/span>tomorrow<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>cozinheiro<\/b> (<\/span>chef<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>nenhum<\/b> (<\/span>none<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n
