This time I am back with cool Polish words every learner should know. Since <em>most<\/em> of the words aren\u2019t slang, it&#8217;s not a big deal if you use them publicly \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start off by acknowledging that what is considered cool is subjective, hence I made sure to pick words that are not only cool in my book but also practical and\/or fun to pronounce. Ready?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Cool Polish words<\/h2>\n<p><b>Zamiast<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; means <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instead. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which can be incredibly useful when you are ordering your favorite pierogies and want more of the meat-stuffed variety than the cabbage ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPoprosz\u0119 wi\u0119cej pierog\u00f3w z mi\u0119sem zamiast tych z kapust\u0105\u201d or\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCould I get more meat pierogies instead of those with cabbage?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCzy mog\u0119 zap\u0142aci\u0107 kart\u0105 zamiast got\u00f3wk\u0105?\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCan I pay by card instead of cash?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMieli\u015bmy si\u0119 tutaj spotka\u0107, ale zamiast tego poszed\u0142 na imprez\u0119\u201d or<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were supposed to meet here, but instead he went to a party\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third example brings me to my next word. <\/span><b>Impreza<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">party. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think both the spelling and pronunciation are cool (kind of like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fiesta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Spanish), plus it&#8217;s a word that you will hear often when visiting Poland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fun fact: the word party in Spanish and Polish seems to inspire car manufacturers to name their car models after this fun activity. Eg. Ford Fiesta and Subaru Impreza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGdzie si\u0119 poznali\u015bcie?\u201d (Where did you meet?)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNa imprezie.\u201d (At a party.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTyle tu ludzi. Co to jest?\u201d (Why are there so many people here?)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cImpreza!\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s a party!\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of parties, you might start to wonder when is the best time to have a party in Poland?\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is simple. During the <\/span><b>lato!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lato means <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is as easily spelt as it is pronounced, and it is a strongly cherished word among Poles because of what it stands for. Warm, sunny days, colorful, iced drinks, and relaxation!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sobota<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saturday<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another word associated with rest &#8211; not just in Poland but most of the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDzisiaj jest pi\u0105tek czy sobota?\u201d (Is today Friday or Saturday?)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSobota, mo\u017cemy dalej spa\u0107\u201d. (Saturday, we can sleep in).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my personal favorites in terms of cool-sounding Polish words is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oFEwN7j0IWw\"><b>chrz\u0105szcz<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beetle. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only does it only have one vowel, the word can be tricky to pronounce even among native speakers &#8211; so much so that it has inspired its own poem\/tongue-twister written by Jan Brzechwa which starts like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cW Szczebrzeszynie chrz\u0105szcz brzmi w trzcinie (In Szczebrzeszyn a beetle sounds in the reeds)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Szczebrzeszyn z tego s\u0142ynie.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 (And Szczebrzeszyn is famous for this)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W\u00f3\u0142 go pyta: \u201ePanie chrz\u0105szczu, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 (An ox asks him: &#8220;Mister beetle)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Po c\u00f3\u017c pan tak brz\u0119czy w g\u0105szczu? \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 (What are you buzzing in the bushes for?&#8221;)\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q8ngxw2x6UM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you want to find out how the rest of it sounds, I challenge you to try to follow along.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next two Polish words are <\/span><b>\u017car\u00f3wka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>par\u00f3wka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are spelt the same except for the first letter, which also happens to drastically change the meaning. \u017bar\u00f3wka is a light bulb while park\u00f3wka is a sausage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDlaczego tak ciemno? Zgasi\u0142e\u015b \u015bwiat\u0142o?\u201d (Why is it so dark? Did you turn off the light?\u201d)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNie, \u017car\u00f3wka si\u0119 wypali\u0142a\u201d.\u00a0 (No, the lightbulb died).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMasz list\u0119 rzeczy do kupienie w sklepie?\u201d (Do you have the shopping list?)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTak, par\u00f3wka, jajko, chleb i majonez\u201d. (Yes. Sausage, eggs, bread and mayonnaise&#8221;).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another cool Polish word is oscypek,which is smoked sheep-milk cheese, that is also known as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/story\/20180327-polands-surprisingly-beautiful-cheese\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poland\u2019s surprisingly beautiful cheese. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is no denying that the intricate carvings on the highland cheese are impressive, the taste is very salty, smokey and specific and thus not for everyone. Regardless, if you are visiting Poland it should be on your must-try list, along with meat pierogies, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwestiasmaku.com\/przepis\/sernik-tradycyjny\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sernik<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/delishably.com\/world-cuisine\/Halupki-Stuffed-Cabbage-Recipe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">golabki<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; to name a few.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least is the word <\/span><b>u\u015bmiech<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or smile. The first letter\u2019s shape tends to help Polish learners remember what it stands for which is kind of cool.
