My first year in Japan was winding down to a close, and what a year it was! I had went from zero Japanese to being able to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2019\/05\/29\/japanese-for-beginners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enjoy some easy podcasts in Japanese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I was really proud of myself and finishing the year off with my first Japanese movie seemed like a fitting way to wrap things up.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or at least, it seemed that way up until about 5 minutes into the movie. <strong>I understood basically nothing.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is it so hard to understand spoken Japanese?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disappointed as I was at the time, I\u2019ve come to feel that my understanding of the language learning process &#8211; and listening comprehension\u2019s place within it &#8211; was flawed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When people say that they\u2019re learning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019re not quite telling the truth. Japanese is a stupendously huge thing, much too large to be consumed in a single bite. A more accurate statement is that they\u2019re learning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Japanese &#8211; grammar points, vocabulary, kanji, so forth. We divide and conquer, starting with things small and tangible and gradually working our way up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas these things are singular and straightforward tasks, listening comprehension is a holistic skill that is comprised of many smaller skills. Just like you aren\u2019t really \u201clearning Japanese\u201d, you also aren\u2019t really just \u201cwatching a movie\u201d or \u201clistening to a podcast\u201d. You\u2019re doing a lot of things at once, and some of those things are probably things you haven\u2019t quite conquered yet.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thingto get your head around is what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listening<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> really is.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is listening comprehension, really?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its core, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.thelinguist.com\/listening-comprehension\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listening comprehension is about being able to take in information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some of that information is physical (what your mouth, nose and vocal chords are doing), some of it is emotional (tone, word choice), some of it is cognitive (being able to follow ideas) and some of it is perceptive (being able to understand what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason that you don\u2019t understand something will differ for each piece of audio. From now on, every time you don\u2019t understand something you hear, your job is to ask yourself one question:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why don\u2019t I understand this?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-japanese-online\/?utm_source=LingQ Blog&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=blogpost&amp;utm_content=JapaneseListeningPractice:ResourcesYouCanUse\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176597787 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png\" alt=\"Learn Japanese online at LingQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phonetics: Recognizing Japanese as Japanese<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phonetics, the ability to correctly interpret what you hear, <strong>is the most fundamental aspect of listening comprehension<\/strong>. If you can\u2019t recognize the sounds \u3057\u3093\u304b\u3093\u305b\u3093 as being \u3057\u3093\u304b\u3093\u305b\u3093 then that meaning will be lost on you even if you understood everything else in the sentence. Part of phonetics is stuff like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-xcJnHR9MKo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vowels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lN-jMhIwXs4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consonants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which you might have heard of, but on a more practical level, it\u2019s more about being able to understand <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Kpdgi6_qeU4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how Japanese strings words together<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To give an example of what I mean by \u201cstringing words together\u201d, consider the English phrase \u201cJapanese is one heck of a language\u201d. Do you actually say, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese. Is. One. Heck. Of. A. Language? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No! That would sound strange. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s difficult to understand native speakers because the sounds coming out of their mouths go way beyond what\u2019s in the subtitles.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get back to Japanese, consider the following: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you hear the difference between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forvo.com\/word\/%E3%81%86%E3%81%BE%E3%81%84\/#ja\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u3046\u307e\u3044<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forvo.com\/word\/%E3%81%86%E3%81%BE%E3%81%8F\/#ja\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u3046\u307e\u304f<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? This is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ReTQSh15GII\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitch accent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you actually hear an \u201c\u3046\u201d sound at the end of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forvo.com\/word\/%E3%81%A7%E3%81%99\/#ja\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u3067\u3059<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? This is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coelang.tufs.ac.jp\/ja\/en\/pmod\/practical\/03-03-01.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vowel devoicing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Japanese <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forvo.com\/word\/%E3%81%AE\/#ja\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u306e<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identical to English <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forvo.com\/word\/no\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? No! The difference is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/iprc.soest.hawaii.edu\/users\/furue\/jp-pron.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dipthongs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \/no\/ vs \/no\u028a\/.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If what you are seeing doesn\u2019t quite match what you\u2019re hearing, figure out why. You don\u2019t have to master all the little details now, just be aware of them and start to think about what you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vocabulary: Building with those phonetic blocks<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vocabulary is what happens when you start putting phonemes together. Listening comprehension doesn\u2019t end at hearing [<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u0255i\/\u014bka\\\u0274se\u0274] and recognizing it as being the Japanese word \u3057\u3093\u304b\u3093\u305b\u3093 &#8211; you\u2019ve also got to know what the word means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, vocabulary acquisition is pretty straightforward. You\u2019ll naturally improve your vocabulary just by spending time with Japanese, <strong>so find content that is interesting to you and keep at it. <\/strong>For example,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/27\/japanese-songs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the lyrics of your favorite music<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or even from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2018\/09\/05\/anime-subtitles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the dialogue of your favorite anime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>But organizing your content can be tiresome. The other stages &#8211; planning, action, results and reflection &#8211; are equally important. The right amount of theory is just enough to get the ball rolling and give you something to focus on. I suggest progressing through content as you normally would, but \u201chighlighting\u201d one new concept to listen out for. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t already following something, pick one of the below podcasts. While consuming the content, listen specifically for how they say \u3067\u3059 and \uff5e\u307e\u3059. Does it match how you\u2019re saying it? If so, great! If not, why not? What do you need to change to sound more natural.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/news\/easy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NHK Easy News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the perennial suggestion given to people beginning to listen to Japanese content. It is, literally, easy news &#8211; the same stuff you\u2019d read in a normal newspaper, just in simpler language.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsinslowjapanese.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News in Slow Japanese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is similar to NHK Easy News in that each episode features a clearly pronounced, short Japanese text, but its content tends to be more light-hearted. Go to NHK for real news, go here for poodle police dogs and shaved ice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those seeking more lesson-like content, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhk.or.jp\/lesson\/english\/learn\/list\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NHK Easy Japanese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the place to go. Each of the 48 dialogues is clearly narrated and focuses on a simple grammar point. Furthermore, because everything in this series is so fundamental, it\u2019s also what I would suggest starting with for those wanting to work on their pronunciation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re sick of drier academic content, I\u2019d like to put forward <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCBG-DC14KbP9QXnkprkER7w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u602a\u7570\u4f1d\u64ad\u653e\u9001\u5c40<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Strange Stories on the Radio). The channel updates very regularly and its 5-10 minute long episodes are the perfect length to be squeezed in whenever you\u2019ve got a few minutes throughout the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always go to scary stories when I begin learning a new language because scary is scary, even if the language is simple. (Note: Many of the stories on the channel are more \u201ccreepy\u201d than \u201cscary\u201d). As a plus, the narrator reads so clearly that the generated transcripts are very accurate. Perfect for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/25\/complete-guide-importing-lingq\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">importing into LingQ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019d like to begin reading in Japanese but can\u2019t find an interesting book, there\u2019s no better place to go than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCL4QAojeGy6CJ9R2PwmlmJQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6587\u5b66YouTuber\u30d9\u30eb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Bell)! Bell makes YouTube videos where she talks about books that she has read, and so far as books go, it\u2019s sort of an all-in-one channel. Unlike the exaggerated or robotic voices in earlier content, this channel features very natural Japanese and most of the newer videos are fully transcribed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLn7iYKq-G3PKbpPv_QTzFHETugwSdT67I\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176600493 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg\" alt=\"Learn Japanese with the LingQ podcast\" width=\"870\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1-768x216.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1-600x169.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final channel I\u2019d like to recommend is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_-suKH0GJno\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u66f8\u9053\u5bb6 \u6771\u5bae\u305f\u304f\u307f<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Takumi the Calligrapher). I\u2019ve linked a video where Takumi breaks down the do\u2019s and don\u2019ts of writing beautiful hiragana and, though you might be a bit dubious, I think this is a super place to begin your listening comprehension studies. Given the nature of calligraphy, Takumi spends the entire video demonstrating what he is narrating, so these videos are a bit easier to follow than other content aimed at native Japanese speakers. The video is also chock-full of useful little phrases you can learn to help with your own explanations like \u305d\u3057\u3066\u30fc<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and then<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or \u7d9a\u3044\u3066 (\u3064\u3065\u3044\u3066)\u30fc<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">next\/from there<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not to mention improving your handwriting!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listening comprehension starts with pronunciation and vocabulary, but it can be stretched much further out. Having a perfect ear for phonetics and knowing a million words won\u2019t get you very far if you don\u2019t have the grammar basis to understand how those words are related or the topical background required to follow ideas being developed and strung together. So don\u2019t fret if you get hung up on some details &#8211; what\u2019s much more important is being able to step back and appreciate how everything fits together.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In July, 2015, a friend invited me over to watch the movie Densha Otoko.
