{"id":176593890,"date":"2019-05-29T13:21:34","date_gmt":"2019-05-29T20:21:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog-new\/?p=176593890"},"modified":"2025-05-19T11:26:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T18:26:49","slug":"japanese-for-beginners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/japanese-for-beginners\/","title":{"rendered":"Where to Find Helpful Content in Japanese for Beginners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Languages are not learned for the sheer sake of accumulating a stack of vocabulary words or conquered grammatical ideas, they\u2019re learned to be lived and breathed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everybody studying Japanese will eventually come to this crossroads. Consuming native content isn\u2019t feasible before reaching it, so we stick to textbooks, flashcards and guided learning materials. Upon crossing it, consuming native content will have become possible and the pursuit of fluency becomes a matter of exposure, patience and refinement. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a hazy period of time in which this road must be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crossed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to go from learning Japanese to living Japanese. This crossing is a journey in and of itself, an awkward state where Japanese media can be touched but not quite grasped. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I believe that it only takes one good piece of content to get across this road. If you can get through one solid piece of content then you can get through a second and a third until eventually you realize that you\u2019re indeed on the other side: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you can understand Japanese! <\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My goal today is to help you find this first stepping stone.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_176593901\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176593901\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-176593901\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Blog-Post-16.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Blog-Post-16.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Blog-Post-16-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Blog-Post-16-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176593901\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image courtesy of mscircumstance.wordpress<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>When am I ready to take the step into native content?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a question that only you can answer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no clearly defined point at which your Japanese becomes good enough, this is very much a spectrum. At one extremity is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and at the other is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leisure. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earlier you begin, the more <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be required. At what point these two extremities balance depends on your personal patience and tolerance for ambiguity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my case, I was somewhere between an N3\/N2 level when I found myself at Step 0, a point at which I was able to look at Japanese text and humor the possibility of one day understanding it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 0: Reading Real Japanese<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I bring them up time and time again, but so far as I\u2019m concerned, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Read-Real-Japanese-Fiction-Contemporary\/dp\/1568365292\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read Real Japanese: Fiction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its counterpart, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Read-Real-Japanese-Essays-Contemporary\/dp\/1568364148\/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=real+real+japanese&amp;qid=1558444866&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read Real Japanese: Essays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are worthy of worship and worth their weight in gold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each book is a compilation of several unadulterated Japanese short stories or essays with added furigana, a running dictionary and a grammatical breakdown of each sentence. This is the closest you\u2019ll get to training wheels. It\u2019s as if a teacher were standing over your shoulder and providing a line-by-line explanation of everything that you\u2019d just read. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>LingQ&#8217;s Mini Stories<\/strong> and beginner content are other great resources for beginners. These pieces of content use the most common types of vocabulary to help you get used to Japanese. No matter what, you&#8217;re going to come across new vocabulary that is completely foreign to you. Rather than pausing to look up each word or phrase, if you use LingQ you can simply tap on the word (or phrase) to pull up its meaning. Not only does this save you a lot of time, it also helps minimize any disruption and helps you get through Japanese content faster. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LingQ is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-japanese-online\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best way to learn Japanese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> online because it lets you learn from content you enjoy!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1: Working through your first piece of native Japanese content.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I unfortunately don\u2019t know what level of Japanese you have or your personal interests, so I\u2019ve gone out and organized a variety of content that I think is suitable for someone just beginning to get into native content.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easy, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">though. I\u2019ve included each of the resources below because they each have at least one specific quality that makes them accessible. Your job is to decide what your biggest struggle in Japanese is and pick out content accordingly. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Reading content for beginners<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this is your first dive into content beyond the textbook, graded readers, or guided courses, I recommend starting with reading material. Whereas audio and visual content moves on and might include several words in the span of a second, reading content is static and leaves you as much time as necessary to pore over what you\u2019re looking at. You can copy individual words into a dictionary, entire paragraphs into Google Translate or even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/25\/complete-guide-importing-lingq\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">import articles, anime, and much more directly into LingQ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with one click via its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/26\/youtube-videos-into-lingq\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">browser extension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, below is a brand new lesson in LingQ using the transcript and audio from the popular anime, <em>Shirokuma Cafe<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176593897 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/shirokuma.gif\" alt=\"Learn Japanese on the LingQ mobile app\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most vanilla place to start is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/news\/easy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NHK Easy News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is exactly what it sounds like. Normal news articles are taken and rewritten in a simplified format, furigana, audio-recording and pop-up dictionary included. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f you\u2019d like to read something a bit more exciting than the news, check out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/matcha-jp.com\/easy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MATCHA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an online magazine with a sister-site of articles written in simple Japanese. MATCHA has a wide variety of articles and a very aesthetic layout. Just like NHK, each simplified article also has a corresponding \u201cnormal\u201d article that you can challenge yourself with after working through the simplified one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to MATCHA, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/watanoc.com\/tag\/n5\/page\/19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watanoc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another online web magazine with a wide variety of content aimed at beginners. Notably, WATANOC organizes its articles into JLPT Levels: there are almost 200 articles aimed at N5 or N4 and a few dozen aimed at N3. All of the articles on WATANOC are feature accompanying audio from a native speaker and a pop-up dictionary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you like reading but want something more meaty than Watanoc, there are 36 free graded reader lessons available on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wasabi-jpn.com\/japanese-lessons\/fairy-tales-and-short-stories-with-easy-japanese\/#program-table\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wasabi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Each one is an original Japanese story that was rewritten for an ~N4 level. Each lesson comes with an English translation, audio and some brief grammar notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned, all of the above resources can be directly imported into LingQ so you can stay organized, look up new vocabulary, review, and learn Japanese at a quicker pace.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-japanese-online\/?utm_source=LingQ Blog&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=blogpost&amp;utm_content=WheretoFindHelpfulContentinJapaneseforBeginners\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176597787 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png\" alt=\"Learn Japanese online at LingQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Video\u30fbAudio content for beginners<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re comfortable reading and are ready to move on for a challenge, or perhaps you\u2019ve taken a more conversational approach to Japanese and are more comfortable hearing it than seeing it, I\u2019m happy to say that there is an incredible wealth of audio (podcast, music) and video (TV, YouTube, anime, drama, etc) available in Japanese. Again, in no particular order:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start out small, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hirogaru-nihongo.jp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hirogaru<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a Japanese site with a lot of short, well-done videos made to teach foreigners about concepts important to the \u201cessence\u201d of traditional Japan &#8211; calligraphy, temples, tea and the like. Each video has available subtitles and an assortment of related articles that are narrated by native speakers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/lets-learn-japanese-from-small-talk\/id1449307021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s Learn Japanese from Smalltalk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a new podcast that is super for people just beginning to get into natural Japanese. The two hosts are Japanese exchange students studying in England and they talk about everyday life topics like Valentine\u2019s day in Japan or Disneyland. The podcast is almost all Japanese and while there are no scripts available, the hosts speak very clearly and often translate more difficult words into English. This is a great stepping stone between content for learners and native content. (Also available on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/1tHH40EmOge2Ale4nlYWTq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and many podcast apps for Android users).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you like this podcast, be sure to check out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qK--SAlGD0Q&amp;list=PLA5UIoabheFO87Zs0a2W-5ZMzWBjhg_Ap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easy Japanese by Easy Languages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on YouTube! Each episode features a host walking around and interviewing random people on the street about topics like happiness or sushi. A major advantage of being on YouTube is that each episode is fully subtitled in English, Japanese and Romaji. Many different types of people are interviewed so this is a really great chance to get introduced to different styles of speech. Also, the LingQ extension allows you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/26\/youtube-videos-into-lingq\/\">import YouTube videos<\/a>, allowing you to import content and create interactive lessons.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLn7iYKq-G3PKbpPv_QTzFHETugwSdT67I\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176600493 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg\" alt=\"Learn Japanese with the LingQ podcast\" width=\"870\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1-768x216.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1-600x169.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Japanese_Blog-Banner-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might not think that rocket science and the intricate workings of our galaxy is a great place to start your journey into Japanese, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-TQGgfWdYS4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next Space Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might beg to differ. Just like it sounds, the channel puts out videos on everything to do with outer space. While this does mean that there is some more difficult vocabulary featured, I think this is made up for by the fact that each video is fully subtitled and narrated in a clear, relatively slow voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a more worldly level, Japan is blessed with a quite significant YouTube scene, at the top of which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rJ_EuCXKx6U\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hikakin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Hikakin films himself doing all sorts of goofy stuff &#8211; in this video he\u2019s making a giant ball of aluminum &#8211; and is oddly entertaining. This content is intended for Japanese people, not learners, but Hikakin is very expressive and tends to subtitle the gist of what he\u2019s saying. If you like Hikakin, there are many similar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/05\/japanese-youtubers\/\">Japanese YouTubers<\/a> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zpaNvUZU-SA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hajime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uYeFyxvnsCw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fischer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I personally have a special place in my heart for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G4mKOWXuIiA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyou chan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Final thoughts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter what you choose or what your current level is, the first piece of content that you work through is going to be the hardest. Japanese aside, this is because the first piece of media you consume is where you overcome the psychological barrier of consuming content for \u201cnatives\u201d and prove to yourself that you are good enough.
