No? Then let me show you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, you can see how the numbers are written in Portuguese and, in brackets, you can read their pronunciation (try reading them outloud, not only in your head):<\/span><\/p>\n<p>0 &#8211; zero (zeh-ro)<br \/>\n1 &#8211; um (oon) or uma (oon-mah)<br \/>\n2 &#8211; dois (doy-z) or duas (doo-ahs)<br \/>\n3 &#8211; tr\u00eas (treh-z)<br \/>\n4 &#8211; quatro (kwah-troh)<br \/>\n5 &#8211; cinco (seen-koh)<br \/>\n6 &#8211; seis (say-z)<br \/>\n7 &#8211; sete (seh-chee)<br \/>\n8 &#8211; oito (oy-toh)<br \/>\n9 &#8211; nove (noh-veh)<br \/>\n10 &#8211; dez (deh-z)<br \/>\n11 &#8211; onze (ohn-zeh)<br \/>\n12 &#8211; doze (doh-zeh)<br \/>\n13 &#8211; treze (treh-zeh)<br \/>\n14 &#8211; catorze (kwah-tor-zeh)<br \/>\n15 &#8211; quinze (keen-zeh)<br \/>\n16 &#8211; dezesseis (deh-zeh-say-z)<br \/>\n17 &#8211; dezessete (deh-zeh-sai-teh)<br \/>\n18 &#8211; dezoito (deh-zoy-toh)<br \/>\n19 &#8211; dezenove (deh-zeh-noh-veh)<br \/>\n20 &#8211; vinte (veen-teh)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heads-up! Although the numbers ending with the letter E should be pronounced with the \u2018eh\u2019 sound, most native speakers end up pronouncing them with the \u2018ee\u2019 sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you ever notice that the round numbers in English, from 20 to 90, all end with \u201cty\u201d? The same happens in Portuguese, but for the round numbers 30 to 90. Also, instead of ending with a &#8220;ty&#8221;, they end with a &#8220;ta&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>30 &#8211; trinta (treen-tah)<br \/>\n40 &#8211; quarenta (kwah-ren-tah)<br \/>\n50 &#8211; cinquenta (seen-kwen-tah)<br \/>\n60 &#8211; sessenta (seh-sen-tah)<br \/>\n70 &#8211; setenta (seh-ten-tah)<br \/>\n80 &#8211; oitenta (oy-ten-tah)<br \/>\n90 &#8211; noventa (noh-ven-tah)<br \/>\n100 &#8211; cem (say-m) or cento (sen-toh)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easy, right? What if you want to say the numbers in between, such as 23, 54, 78 or 139? Well, it\u2019s simple: all you have to do is put together the numbers you\u2019ve already learned with the word \u201ce\u201d, which means \u201cand\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is how it\u2019s done:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>23 &#8211; vinte e tr\u00eas<br \/>\n54 &#8211; cinquenta e quatro<br \/>\n78 &#8211; setenta e oito<br \/>\n139 &#8211; cento e trinta e nove<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Portuguese, we don\u2019t use a word like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hundred<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a bit tricky to get used to. The good news is that all you there&#8217;s a bit of a pattern you can still follow, as seen below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>200 &#8211; duzentos (doo-zen-tohs)<br \/>\n300 &#8211; trezentos (treh-zen-tohs)<br \/>\n400 &#8211; quatrocentos (kwah-troh-sen-tohs)<br \/>\n500 &#8211; quinhentos (kee-nyen-tohs)<br \/>\n600 &#8211; seiscentos (say-sen-tohs)<br \/>\n700 &#8211; setecentos (seh-teh-sen-tohs)<br \/>\n800 &#8211; oitocentos (oy-toh-sen-tohs)<br \/>\n900 &#8211; novecentos (noh-veh-sen-tohs)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<i>housand <\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">million<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the other hand, are easier. <strong>M<\/strong><\/span><b>il <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>milh\u00e3o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (they are pronounced \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 and \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mee-lyee-aung<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019). Keep in mind that <\/span><b>milh\u00e3o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, unlike it&#8217;s English counterpart, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">million<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has a plural form. Then you&#8217;ll need to know Portuguese ordinal numbers. Here they are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>1st &#8211; primeiro (pree-mey-roh)<br \/>\n2nd &#8211; segundo (seh-goon-doh)<br \/>\n3rd &#8211; terceiro (ter-sey-roh)<br \/>\n4th &#8211; quarto (kwar-toh)<br \/>\n5th &#8211; quinto (keen-toh)<br \/>\n6th &#8211; sexto (say-eesh-toh)<br \/>\n7th &#8211; s\u00e9timo (seh-tee-moh)<br \/>\n8th &#8211; oitavo (oy-tah-voh)<br \/>\n9th &#8211; nono (noh-noh)<br \/>\n10th &#8211; d\u00e9cimo (deh-see-moh)<\/p>\n<h2><b>Portuguese time<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since we are on the topic of numbers, how about we also learn how to tell the time and the dates? Let\u2019s start with the time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Que horas s\u00e3o?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; What time is it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To answer, all you have to do is read the numbers you see on the clock, adding them together by saying \u201ce\u201d in between. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s it! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just remember that in Portuguese, the hour is a feminine noun. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>S\u00e3o\u2026 &#8211; It\u2019s\u2026<br \/>\n9 o\u2019clock &#8211; 9 horas<br \/>\n10:30 &#8211; dez e trinta<br \/>\n1:15 &#8211; uma e quinze<br \/>\n2:45 &#8211; duas e quarenta e cinco<br \/>\n6:20 &#8211; seis e vinte<br \/>\n8:50 &#8211; oito e cinquenta<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few useful tips regarding the time:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>During noon, we say <em>meio-dia<\/em> and for midnight we say <em>meia-noite<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s common to use the 24-hour format, since Portuguese doesn&#8217;t use AM and PM. One o\u2019clock in the afternoon is <em>13 horas<\/em>, two o\u2019clock in the afternoon is <em>14 horas<\/em>, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s 7:55 or 10:50, you can say five to eight or ten to eleven, <em>cinco pras oito <\/em>or <em>dez pras onze<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Portuguese<b>\u00a0dates<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s talk about the dates. First of all, this is how you ask the date:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Que dia \u00e9 hoje? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; What\u2019s the date today?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Portuguese, we say the dates like the British do: day-month-year. We use the word \u201cde\u201d, which means of, to link all three into one sentence.
