{"id":176593448,"date":"2019-05-20T22:01:16","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T05:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog-new\/?p=176593448"},"modified":"2025-05-19T11:26:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T18:26:49","slug":"the-french-preposition-de","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/the-french-preposition-de\/","title":{"rendered":"The French Preposition \u201cDe\u201d and How to Use It Properly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our recent posts, we\u2019ve been talking about the different ways that you can access <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2019\/04\/03\/french-youtube-channels\/\">French content<\/a> to help you improve your language skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But today, I\u2019d like to dive into something a little more grammar focused and at the same time, more tricky: the French preposition \u201cDe\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In several ways, the French preposition \u201cDe\u201d is a bit of a special preposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For starters, it has a variety of meanings and it also has several \u201cfunctional\u201d usages, where it serves a grammatical purpose even though it doesn\u2019t have any meaning as such a word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, unlike most other prepositions in the French language, \u201cDe\u201d can be combined with \u201cLe\u201d and \u201cLes\u201d in order to produce a few rare, alternative forms of the word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the following article, you\u2019ll learn the meaning of the preposition \u201cDe\u201d and how it&#8217;s used, along with a few examples <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and English translations as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Many Meanings of \u201cDe\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned, \u201cDe\u201d has a variety of different meanings in the French language, which we will enumerate below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For starters, it can be translated to the English word \u201cFrom\u201d, especially if used in conjunction with a motion verb. For example: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elle vient <\/span><\/i><b><i>de<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Paris. \u2013 She is <\/span><\/i><b><i>from<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Paris.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be translated to \u201cOf\u201d in some contexts when used to describe on image or picture. For example: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Un portrait <\/span><b>de<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> l\u2019oc\u00e9an. \u2013 A portrait <\/span><b>of<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the ocean.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be the equivalent of \u201cOf\u201d when used to denote a certain component of something or when used to form a compound noun. For example: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le doigt <\/span><b>de<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ma main gauche. \u2013 The finger <\/span><b>of<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> my left hand. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDe\u201d can be used to show possession, similar to using an apostrophe and an \u201cS\u201d in English. For example: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le manteau <\/span><b>de<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Marie. \u2013 Marie<\/span><b>\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jacket.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be the equivalent of \u201cFrom\u201d when it\u2019s being used to describe a cause. For example: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elle est mort <\/span><b>de<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cancer. \u2013 She died <\/span><b>from<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cancer.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be used to denote what an object is made of. For example: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C\u2019est fait <\/span><b>de<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> velours. \u2013 It is made <\/span><b>of<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> velvet.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, \u201cDe\u201d can be used to introduce an adjective\u2019s \u201cobject\u201d, just like how you would use \u201cWith\u201d in English. For example: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J\u2019\u00e9tais content <\/span><b>de<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> moi. This is especially true when talking about where someone or something is moving to or coming from, as well as marking the beginning of a period of time or a range of numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should also note that in English, people most often use <\/span><b><i>between ___ and ___,<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than <\/span><b><i>from ___ to ___<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but essentially, the meanings are the same, they just sound different in English. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Examples<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In French, if you wanted to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elle vient <\/span><\/i><b><i>de<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Paris.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, it could be translated in two different ways; either \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She comes <\/span><\/i><b><i>from<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Paris.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d or \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is coming <\/span><\/i><b><i>from<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Paris.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le boucher est ouvert <\/span><\/i><b><i>de<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> midi \u00e0 cinq heures.\u201d,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it would be translated as \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The butcher is open <\/span><\/i><b><i>from<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noon until 5 o\u2019clock.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIl a <\/span><b>de<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 3 \u00e0 10 animaux.\u201d, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would be translated as \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has <\/span><b>from<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 3 to 10 animals.\u201d or \u201cHe has <\/span><b>between<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 3 and 10 animals.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=176593102&amp;action=edit\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176600363 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/French_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg\" alt=\"Learn French with the LingQ podcast\" width=\"870\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/French_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/French_Blog-Banner-1-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/French_Blog-Banner-1-768x216.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/French_Blog-Banner-1-600x169.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/French_Blog-Banner-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Recap<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are, of course, exceptions to every rule. And although English tends to use \u201cFrom\u201d in the following situations, French does not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When denoting the origin of a decision or the action of taking. For example: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I took the knife <\/span><\/i><b><i>from<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> my pocket<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d wouldn\u2019t be \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J\u2019ai pris le couteau <\/span><\/i><b><i>de<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ma poche<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Instead, it would be \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J\u2019ai pris le couteau <\/span><\/i><b><i>dans ma<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> poche.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it\u2019s only the starting point of a range that\u2019s being mentioned. For example: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prices <\/span><\/i><b><i>from<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u20ac10<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d wouldn\u2019t be \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prix <\/span><\/i><b><i>de<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u20ac10<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, but rather \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prix <\/span><\/i><b><i>\u00e0 partir de<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u20ac10.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cases where there is ambiguity between prepositions such as \u201c<\/span><b><i>From<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><b><i>Of<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. In this case, other French prepositions, such as \u201c<\/span><b><i>En provenance de<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d or \u201c<\/span><\/i><b><i>Depuis<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, would be used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you get your mind wrapped around the concept of polite French formality <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and its relationship to the \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tu\/vous\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choice, you\u2019ll understand French greetings more easily.
