It means \u201cankle\u201d but literally comes out to \u201cjump link.\u201d I love it because the sounds just roll off the tongue so well. Besides, it fits the meaning perfectly when you think about it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mein Sprunggelenk ist geschwollen.<\/span><\/em><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My ankle is swollen.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Die Verschlimmbesserung<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a favorite in France. It describes a situation where you try to make things better but end up getting into a worse fix than when you started \u2013 literally a worsening-bettering!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Das war eine echte Verschlimmbesserung.<\/span><\/em><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was a real doozy.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Der Purzelbaum<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indonesians love this word for \u201csomersault.\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Der Purzel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a slang word for a cute little boy, a \u201crascal\u201d if you will. When a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purzel<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stands on his hands, he becomes a little \u201crascal tree\u201d &#8211; at least for a little while before he topples over!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kannst du einen Purzelbaum schlagen?<\/span><\/em><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you do a somersault?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Der Spuckschluck<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Russian favorite might make you shudder \u2013 the German word for \u201cbackwash\u201d literally means \u201cspit-swallow!\u201d It\u2019s also used to describe that last little bit of drink in the bottle that you\u2019d rather not finish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schlucken<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is fairly close in meaning to \u201cgulp,\u201d as in \u201cgulping something down.\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spucken<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means, \u201cto spit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lass keinen Spuckschluck in der Flasche stehen!<\/span><\/em><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t leave that last little bit in the bottle!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-german-online\/?utm_source=LingQ Blog&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=blogpost&amp;utm_content=SevenFunnyGermanWords,Worldwide\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176597787 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png\" alt=\"Learn German online using LingQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><b>Jein<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another favorite from the French. It\u2019s probably not too hard to guess that this is a blend of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ja<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nein<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it a single word with \u201cyes\u201d and \u201cno\u201d connotations. While English \u201cyes and no\u201d is a slightly stilted and formal answer to an ambiguous question, German solves this problem very neatly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kennst du sie? Boah\u2026 jein?<\/span><\/em><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you know her? Uhhh\u2026 yes and no?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Die Popelbremse<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One more in the category of slightly gross words, this one is a hit among German learners in Spain. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Der Popel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to snot or mucus, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eine Bremse<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a brake, like on a bike or car. What could a mucus-brake possibly mean? Well\u2026 a mustache!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Er hat eine kleine Popelbremse.<\/span><\/em><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has a little mustache.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Tsch\u00fcss!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last on the list but favorite in my opinion, I was initially confused why so many Chinese people would think the German word for \u201cgoodbye\u201d is so funny. Only later did I find out that its pronunciation is remarkably similar to the Chinese phrase \u53bb\u6b7b (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qu si)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning \u201cgo die!\u201d Can you imagine the hysterics in every introductory German class in China?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wir sehen uns morgen! Tsch\u00fcss!<\/span><\/em><br \/><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See you tomorrow!
