That would be the dictionary definition of it, at least.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in real life (read: the Internet), memes represent a crucial part of an English learner\u2019s day-to-day, without them even realizing it. Let me put it this way: if you refer to \u201ccactus\u201d as \u201ccatcus\u201d, which is a cat with sharp spines, then you\u2019re already learning English through memes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, this may not be the \u201ctraditional\u201d way of learning and improving your skills but it is useful and creative, none the less. Believe it or not, I keep at least half of the memes in this article as posters in my classroom. As to why, they\u2019re funny, memorable and often quite factual, which indirectly contributes to my students\u2019 progress.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me take you through some of my favorite English language memes and why I like them so much when it comes to language learning.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">17 English Language Memes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>#1 Commas save lives<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take care of the ones closest to you. Use commas. Otherwise, you\u2019ll have a pretty <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dinner. And no matter what you do, never say \u201cLet\u2019s eat, grandma!\u201d without explicitly emphasizing the comma!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All lives matter. But, no worries &#8211; you\u2019re not alone.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, that\u2019s pretty normal. However, if you know all of the things in this crazy meme, you\u2019re literally just a step away from speaking English like a native.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>#5 Cats love memes<\/b><br><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For whatever reason, cats always seem to find their way into good English language memes. Whether it\u2019s a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cat-cus <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or just a regular cat with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claws <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paws<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, more often that not, an English sound equivalent seems to appear from the dark. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, it\u2019s the words <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clause <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pause<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Good job, Catmeister!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>#6 English makes sense<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Blog-Post-8.png\" alt=\"Why is English so much fun?\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/humourspot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/ThisfckinglanguageIsweartogod-8146.jpg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two past perfect verbs next to each other? Totally possible! While this sentence looks and sounds weird on the surface, it actually makes perfect sense in English. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, more context would have been preferable, just so that anyone who reads this knows that both of these actions happened in the past before another action in what is presumably a story fully narrated in the past tense.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But still, totally possible\u2026 English is fun.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Blog-Post-9.png\" alt=\"Grammar peeves\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><b>#7 Stop doing it wrong<\/b><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m sure we were all guilty of at least one of these ten things at some point. While English learners misuse words and expressions all the time, there are certain ones to stay clear of. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for these ten\u2026 they may damage your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">street cred<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quite a bit if you get caught doing them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Blog-Post-10.png\" alt=\"Koala\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><b>#8 Equal rights for everyone<\/b><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animals have feelings too, you know? Don\u2019t hurt them by saying things in English that make them feel like they deserve less than us. After five years, this poster still hangs unbothered above the whiteboard next to my desk. A true gem for English learners.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Blog-Post-12.png\" alt=\"tent\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><b>#10 Leave the past behind<\/b><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although this pun is so basic in its nature, not a single English learner I know hasn\u2019t laughed hard upon understanding it. For those of you that don\u2019t get it, it\u2019s the \u201cpast tense\u201d and \u201cpast tents\u201d similarity that turns \u201crun\u201d into \u201cran\u201d. Punny language, I know&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Blog-Post-13.png\" alt=\"English is weird\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><b>#11 English is weird<\/b><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed&#8230; I mean, why not just spell it as \u201cbolony\u201d or \u201cbaloney\u201d? Who knows, right?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Blog-Post-14.png\" alt=\"guinea pig drawing\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><b># 12 It gets weirder\u2026<\/b><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come on, at least give us something to work with?! Just one word that makes sense? <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No? Okay.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Blog-Post-15.png\" alt=\"funny english grammar\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><b>#13 Only you<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id=1c5-Iqb0NkOzOBWXR-0jjKJ1MpwwdP85X\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven words, seven different meanings. Here are a couple:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorry, we are closed due to a shortage of staff.<\/span><\/i><br><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorry, we are closed as we\u2019re short on staff.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/s4.scoopwhoop.com\/anj\/Grammar_nerds10\/81208934.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Blog-Post-18.png\" alt=\"English memes\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><b>#16 He did it<\/b><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A no-no is a yes! Standardized English doesn\u2019t allow the usage of double negations in a single sentence or phrase. As such, two adjacent negations create a positive, which means the witness on the stand (as shown in the picture) said: \u201cI did everything!\u201d Ouch!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Blog-Post-19.png\" alt=\"English memes\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><b>#17 The keyboard police<\/b><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My estimate is that this is how 90 percent of English language memes are born. Correct language use, people. It\u2019s not that hard.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>By the way, am I the only one that does this keyboard thing?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never mind\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English is a beautiful language, and as you can see, memes often show that. Now, it may not be the ideal means of improving your language skills, but what you read or see in memes certainly sticks with you for a long time. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You remember it, share it with others over a good laugh, and aim to keep it in your \u201cmeme treasury\u201d at all times.
