Large family gatherings are very common on big holidays like Lunar New Year and even up until a few decades ago, it was common for several generations of families to live together under one roof. In this post, I&#8217;ll go over the different names of family members in Korean.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents and grandparents<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ubd80\ubaa8\ub2d8 [Boo-mo-nim]: Parents<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc870\ubd80\ubaa8\ub2d8 [Jo-boo-mo-nim]: Grandparents<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud560\uc544\ubc84\uc9c0 [Hal-ah-buh-ji]: Grandfather<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud560\uba38\ub2c8 [Hal-muh-ni]: Grandmother<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc544\ubc84\uc9c0\/\uc544\ube60 [A-buh-ji\/Appa]: Father\/Dad<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc5b4\uba38\ub2c8\/\uc5c4\ub9c8 [Uh-muh-ni\/Omma]: Mother\/Mom<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc544\ub4e4 [A-dul]: Son<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ub538 [Ddal]: Daughter<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that there are different ways to address your parents, similar to saying \u2018father\u2019 or \u2018dad\u2019 in English. The first titles listed (\uc544\ubc84\uc9c0\/\uc5b4\uba38\ub2c8) are formal ways to call your parents and the second ones (\uc544\ube60\/\uc5c4\ub9c8) are more casual.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siblings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age and gender become important factors when choosing how to address your siblings in Korean. For instance, younger siblings do not call their older siblings by their names. Instead, they use specific titles to call them (older siblings can still call their younger siblings by names though). Titles can get even more complicated if you are married, as you will have to memorize all the specific titles for your in-laws as well! Don&#8217;t worry, for now, I will only talk about immediate family member titles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mother\u2019s side<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc774\ubaa8 [Imo]: Your mother\u2019s sister (aunt)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc774\ubaa8\ubd80 [Imo-boo]: Your mother\u2019s sister\u2019s husband<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc0bc\ucd0c [Saam-chon]: Your mother\u2019s brother (uncle)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc219\ubaa8 [Sook-mo]: Your mother\u2019s brother\u2019s wife<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Father\u2019s side<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uace0\ubaa8 [Go-mo]: Your father\u2019s sister (aunt)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uace0\ubaa8\ubd80 [Go-mo-boo]: Your father\u2019s sister\u2019s husband<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud070\uc544\ubc84\uc9c0 [Kun-a-buh-ji]: Your father\u2019s older brother (uncle)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud070\uc5b4\uba38\ub2c8 [Kun-uh-muh-ni]: Your father\u2019s older brother\u2019s wife<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc791\uc740\uc544\ubc84\uc9c0 [Jakun-a-buh-ji]: Your father\u2019s younger brother (uncle)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc791\uc740\uc5b4\uba38\ub2c8 [Jakun-uh-muh-ni]: Your father\u2019s younger brother\u2019s wife<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(If your father\u2019s sibling is unmarried, sometimes they can be addressed as \u2018\uc0bc\ucd0c\u2019 too)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc0ac\ucd0c [Sa-chon]: Cousin (in general)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc870\uce74 [Jo-kah]: Niece\/Nephew (gender-neutral)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can apply some of the previously-mentioned rules and titles for some of these too. For example, you can call your \ud070\uc544\ubc84\uc9c0 (father\u2019s older brother), \ud070\uc544\ube60 (casual version of the title) depending how close you are with your uncle. Another example would be calling your older cousin \uc0ac\ucd0c\uc5b8\ub2c8\/\ub204\ub098\/\ud615\/\uc624\ube60 (sibling titles).
