An equivalent for a boyfriend (usually ch\u0142opak) in slang would be \u201ctyp\u201d or \u201cfacet\u201d. \u201cKumple\u201d means friends and is plural of \u201ckumpel\u201d. Both are used for male friends. A female friend would be \u201ckumpela\u201d and friends \u201ckumpele\u201d. Another interesting expression is \u201cola\u0107\u201d. It\u2019s a verb that\u2019s very difficult to translate but it means that someone doesn\u2019t care about you. Last but not least, there\u2019s \u201cnie b\u00f3j nic\u201d which means \u201cdon\u2019t worry\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popular songs, like \u201cCh\u0142opaki nie p\u0142acz\u0105\u201d, are a great way of learning slang and modern vocabulary. Another good source of study materials is disco polo. Many of them have moving lyrics but due to their poetic qualities require a lot from someone who\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-polish-online\/\">learning Polish<\/a>. The form \u201ckonik\u201d (horsie) is derived from the word \u201cko\u0144\u201d (horse) just like the word \u201cs\u0142onik\u201d (little elephant) is formed from the word \u201cs\u0142o\u0144\u201d (elephant). \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be entirely honest I only realized how challenging the lyrics of some Polish songs were when I was writing this article. As a native speaker you understand the references and the word plays, simply appreciating them. Below I\u2019m mentioning two examples to give you an idea of the level of difficulty I\u2019m referring to. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lady Pank &#8211;\u00a0Zawsze tam, gdzie Ty<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Lady Pank : &quot;Zawsze tam gdzie ty&quot;\" width=\"870\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fyoCXePXQF0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zamieni\u0119 ka\u017cdy oddech w niespokojny wiatr<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll transform every breath into a restless wind <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By zabra\u0142 mnie z powrotem tam gdzie masz sw\u00f3j \u015bwiat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So that it takes me back where your world is<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Posk\u0142adam wszystkie szepty w jeden ciep\u0142y krzyk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll gather all the whispers to form a warm shout<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u017ceby znalaz\u0142 si\u0119 a\u017c tam gdzie pochowa\u0142a\u015b sny<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So that it finds itself where you\u2019ve buried your dreams <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another excerpt with similar qualities comes from \u201cNie p\u0142acz Ewka\u201d (Don\u2019t cry, Ewka) by Perfect: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&lt;iframe width=&#8221;560&#8243; height=&#8221;315&#8243; src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m54WNWCUAE8&#8243; frameborder=&#8221;0&#8243; allow=&#8221;autoplay; encrypted-media&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;&lt;\/iframe&gt;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nie p\u0142acz Ewka, bo tu miejsca brak na twe babskie \u0142zy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t cry, Ewka as there\u2019s no place here for your womanly tears<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Po ulicy mi\u0142o\u015b\u0107 hula wiatr w\u015br\u00f3d rozbitych szyb<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the love street the wind blows among shattered windows<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patrz poeci \u015bliczni prawdy sens roztrwonili w grach<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look, beautiful poets have squandered the meaning of truth in games<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W p\u00f3\u0142litr\u00f3wkach pustych SOS wysy\u0142aj\u0105 w \u015bwiat<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In empty half-liter bottles they\u2019re sending out SOS messages into the world<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from lyrical expressions this stanza also includes a reference to a \u201cp\u00f3\u0142litr\u00f3wka\u201d (half a liter bottle) which to me very obviously means a vodka bottle. Both make the lyrics quite challenging. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a pity that many most loved Polish tracks are understandable only to native speakers and people with a level equivalent to that. However, the world of Polish music is wide and vast and there\u2019s plenty of opportunity for language practice in studying lyrics. Here\u2019s a number of other suggestions that can help you learn the language: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hip-hop songs such as \u201cJestem Bogiem\u201d, \u201cPlus i minus\u201d or \u201cMy Polacy\u201d (WARNING: be prepared for getting acquainted with Polish swear words)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More disco polo: start with \u201cOna ta\u0144czy dla mnie\u201d by Weekend and \u201cJeste\u015b szalona\u201d by Boys<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSzansa\u201d or pretty much any other song by Doda<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning Polish Songs Using Lings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Last week, LingQ published a post talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/12\/kpop-lyrics\/\">how to import your favorite K-Pop songs into LingQ<\/a> to help practice your Korean. Well, you can do the exact same thing using Polish songs!<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s take a look by using\u00a0Lady Pank &#8211;\u00a0Zawsze tam, gdzie Ty.<br \/>\nFirst, find the lyrics (I use Genius.com) and import them into LingQ.
