People were much friendlier to him because of this effort. There are numerous ways of greeting people and saying goodbye to them in Polish. The most important of them are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dzie\u0144 dobry <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDzie\u0144 dobry\u201d is a formal way of saying hello, which will work well with strangers, older people and family members who aren\u2019t a part of your \u201cinner-circle\u201d. This expression is used during the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobry wiecz\u00f3r<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it getting dark? Replace \u201cDzie\u0144 dobry\u201d with \u201cDobry wiecz\u00f3r\u201d when greeting people in the evening and at night. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cze\u015b\u0107<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re friendly with someone or they\u2019re your immediate family member, you should greet them with \u201cCze\u015b\u0107!\u201d, an equivalent of \u201cHi!\u201d. The good thing about this word is that you can also use it to say goodbye. It may be a bit challenging to master its pronunciation but don\u2019t get discouraged. Find a friendly Pole and they\u2019ll help you perfect the way you say the word. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do widzenia<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it\u2019s time to say goodbye in a formal context, say \u201cDo widzenia\u201d which means \u201cUntil I see you again\u201d. If you\u2019re chatting to someone you\u2019re on informal terms with \u201cDzi\u0119ki\u201d would work better.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Przepraszam<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrzepraszam\u201d may be a bit confusing for an English speaker as it may mean both \u201cI\u2019m sorry\u201d and \u201cExcuse me\u201d, depending on the context. It\u2019s a very useful word that may come in handy in many situations: <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Przepraszam, gdzie jest muzeum\/poczta\/kino\/teatr? &#8211; Excuse me, where do I find a museum\/a post office\/a cinema\/a theatre? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Przepraszam gdzie mog\u0119 kupi\u0107 bilety autobusowe? &#8211; Excuse me, where can I buy bus tickets?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Przepraszam, kt\u00f3ra godzina? &#8211; Excuse me, do you know what time it is?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Przepraszam, gdzie jest \u0142azienka\/toaleta? &#8211; Excuse me, where is the bathroom? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Przepraszam. &#8211; I\u2019m sorry. Such places are also more impersonal and rarely require communication. However, if you like corner shops or are planning to visit small towns and villages you may have to use these Polish expressions: <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ile to kosztuje? &#8211; How much does it cost? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czy jest mleko\/kawa\/chleb etc. &#8211; Do you have milk\/coffee\/bread? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czy mog\u0119 zap\u0142aci\u0107 kart\u0105? &#8211; Can I pay with a card? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nie mam got\u00f3wki. &#8211; I have no cash on me. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nie mam drobnych. &#8211; I don\u2019t have change. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poprosz\u0119 kilogram ziemniak\u00f3w\/marchewek\/jab\u0142ek. &#8211; I\u2019ll have a kilogram of potatoes\/carrots\/apples, please. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poprosz\u0119 dwa piwa (brand name). &#8211; I\u2019ll have two beers. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A small note here: Most Polish people would ask directly for two, for example, Heinekens. This requires the proper choice of cases so it may be easier to use the structure suggested above with the name of the brand as written on the product. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ile p\u0142ac\u0119? &#8211; How much do I owe you? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Presenting yourself <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-176591475 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Untitled-design-10.png\" alt=\"Easy and Useful Polish Phrases for Beginners\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Untitled-design-10.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Untitled-design-10-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Untitled-design-10-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/01\/hello-in-polish\/\">Polish hello, goodbyes<\/a>, and such, you&#8217;ll at least learn how to present yourself and answer simple questions to impress a new friend or a pretty girl\/boy: <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jak masz na imi\u0119? &#8211; What\u2019s your name? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mam na imi\u0119 X. \/ Jestem X. &#8211; My name is X. \/ I\u2019m X. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sk\u0105d jeste\u015b? \/ Sk\u0105d pochodzisz? &#8211; Where are you from? \/ Where do you come from?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pochodz\u0119 z Anglii. \/ Pochodz\u0119 ze Stan\u00f3w Zjednoczonych. &#8211; I come from England. \/ I come from the United States. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ile masz lat? &#8211; How old are you? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mam (number) lat. &#8211; I\u2019m (number) years old. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czy jeste\u015b tu na wakacjach? &#8211; Are you here for a holiday? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tak. &#8211; Yes. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nie. &#8211; No. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Na ile tu przyjecha\u0142e\u015b? &#8211; How long are you going to stay for? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Na dwa tygodnie. &#8211; For two weeks. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czy podoba Ci si\u0119 Polska? &#8211; Do you like Poland? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polska to pi\u0119kny kraj. &#8211; Poland is a beautiful country. Better safe than sorry. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niestety nie m\u00f3wi\u0119 po polsku. &#8211; Unfortunately, I don\u2019t speak Polish.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nie rozumiem. &#8211; I don\u2019t understand. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pomocy! &#8211; Help! <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czy mo\u017ce mi Pan \/ Pani pom\u00f3c? &#8211; Can you help me? (first option is used when talking to a man, second to a woman)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zgubi\u0142em si\u0119 \/ Zgubi\u0142am si\u0119 &#8211; I\u2019m lost (the first option is used when you\u2019re a man, the second one when you\u2019re a woman)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potrzebuj\u0119 lekarza. &#8211; I need a doctor. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prosz\u0119 wezwa\u0107 karetk\u0119. &#8211; Please, call an ambulance. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mam alergi\u0119 na koty\/psy. &#8211; I\u2019m allergic to cats\/dogs. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the above expressions require a case which is different than the main one (mianownik) you\u2019ll find in a dictionary. It\u2019s grammatically incorrect to use a wrong case but that doesn\u2019t mean that people won\u2019t understand you. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carry a paper dictionary with you or get an online version when traveling to Poland. Find the word you\u2019re looking for and pronounce it or even show it in its written form, if you\u2019re having communication problems. Don\u2019t shy away from making mistakes. Your goal at this level is just to be understood.
