Steve Kaufmann, who was able translate newspaper editorials from English to Chinese and from Chinese to English, read novels and interpret for people, learned <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.thelinguist.com\/how-to-learn-chinese\">Chinese in 9 months<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Now, everyone learns differently and at a different pace but nonetheless, you can become fluent. In today&#8217;s post, I want to quickly go over a few Chinese grammar points that will prime you for your language journey and hopefully, make you feel less intimidated.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verbs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chinese language is very merciful when it comes to verb conjugations. You&#8217;ll be happy to know that you don&#8217;t have to go through 20 different conjugations to change the effects of a verb. Verbs stay in their original form. In this aspect of Chinese grammar, the effect of the verb depends on the time phrases used in the sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6211\u559c\u6b22\u5531\u6b4c<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W\u01d2 x\u01d0hu\u0101n ch\u00e0ngg\u0113<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I like to sing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6211\u661f\u671f\u4e00\u5531\u6b4c<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W\u01d2 x\u012bngq\u00ed y\u012b ch\u00e0ngg\u0113<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will sing on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u4ed6\u4eec\u4eca\u5929\u5531\u6b4c<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u0101men j\u012bnti\u0101n ch\u00e0ngg\u0113<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will sing today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See how \u5531\u6b4c (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ch\u00e0ngg\u0113<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) stays the same in all the sentences? But, in examples two and three \u201cMonday\u201d and \u201ctoday\u201d are used as the time modifiers. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nouns<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjectives in the Chinese language always come before the noun. This rule has always been in place, even before the decision was made to replace traditional Chinese as the standard with the now modern vernacular simplified form.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6211\u559c\u6b22\u8d35\u7684\u88e4\u5b50<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W\u01d2 x\u01d0hu\u0101n gu\u00ec de k\u00f9zi<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I like expensive pants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u4ed6\u4e0d\u559c\u6b22\u5c0f\u72d7<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u0101 b\u00f9 x\u01d0hu\u0101n xi\u01ceo g\u01d2u<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He doesn\u2019t like small dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u5979\u80fd\u5531\u6b4c\u9ad8\u97f3<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u0101 n\u00e9ng ch\u00e0ngg\u0113 g\u0101oy\u012bn<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She can sing high notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice how all the adjectives are before the nouns. Chinese is focused on the topic of the sentence. In English, the sentences are subject oriented. However, despite these rules Chinese allows for both subject and topic orientation of the sentences. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you\u2019ve seen in the examples above the subject is first in the sentence. But let\u2019s try looking at what would happen if we followed the grammar rule of &#8220;topic first.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u5927\u888b\u6211\u6709\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00e0d\u00e0i w\u01d2 y\u01d2u<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big bag, I have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u8bed\u8a00\u6211\u559c\u6b22\u5b66\u4e60\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Y\u01d4y\u00e1n w\u01d2 x\u01d0hu\u0101n xu\u00e9x\u00ed.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Languages, I like to learn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this grammar pattern is entirely correct in Chinese, it sounds a little unnatural when translated into English. However, if heard in spoken the Chinese language, it makes perfect sense. In these two examples, the &#8216;bag&#8217; and &#8216;languages&#8217; are the topic. If these sentences were made with the subject first they would be just as recognizable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenses<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you may have noticed in previous examples, <strong>tenses remain the same<\/strong>. More specifically there is no distinction between future and present tense. Chinese grammar assumes that the content of the sentence is dependent on the situation at hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6211\u53bb\u56fe\u4e66\u9986\u5b66\u4e60\u4e2d\u6587\u3002<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W\u01d2 q\u00f9 t\u00fash\u016b gu\u01cen xu\u00e9x\u00ed zh\u014dngw\u00e9n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I go to the library to study Chinese<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am going to the library to study Chinese.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sentence can have two definitions depending on the situation. In the first sentence, the speaker is describing where they go to study Chinese should the need arise.
