I mean, linguists tell us that the European languages are pretty much all closely related to one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how can that be the case when English puts its verb in the logical spot, while German puts its verb all the way at the end of the clause sticks?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if we a couple of helping verbs have, then probably will we all these verbs at the end of the clause place have to!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, enough of this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it just goes to show that German sentence structure is something you can\u2019t expect to master in your sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this post, we\u2019ll unravel the web a little bit and show you just what\u2019s going on inside a long and winding German sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>German sentence structure<\/h2>\n<p><b>The Verb Comes Second<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can think of a German sentence as being broken up not into individual words, but into elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Der alte Mann<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sieht<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">das junge Kind.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The old man<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sees<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the young child.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, these elements often correspond quite neatly with their English counterparts. We could add as many adjectives as we wanted before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">der Mann<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it would still stay red, as it\u2019s the subject of the sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when we ask a question, the verb still has to take second place, even before the subject. This is something we can\u2019t do in English at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Der<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in dem Bett schlafende<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hat<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">braune Haare.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">man<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleeping in the bed<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brown hair.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The sleeping-in-the-bed man has brown hair.)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re basically turning a relative clause into an adjective by placing it in the adjective position and sticking an adjective ending on the last word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can be used to stunning effect in German literature, but it really makes for a confusing read!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-german-online\/?utm_source=LingQ Blog&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=blogpost&amp;utm_content=UnderstandingGermanSentenceStructure\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176597787 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png\" alt=\"Learn German online with LingQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><b>Piles of Verbs<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a relative clause following \u201cbecause\u201d or a relative pronoun \u201cthat\u201d or \u201cwhich,\u201d the verb moves to the end of the clause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 along with all of the helping verbs in that clause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Es ist sein Schuld<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weil <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">er <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lauter <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gesprochen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">haben <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sollte<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s his fault<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he should <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoken <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">louder.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, only conjugate one of these. Think about the English sentence: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he should..<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
