Not only is it hard to jump into new social circles, your language skills are constantly going to be put to the test when you\u2019re trying to hang out with native speakers. That\u2019s kind of the point!<\/span><\/p>\n

And nobody wants to hang out for long with someone who speaks like a textbook. Your language doesn\u2019t have to be perfect, but it\u2019s got to be <\/span>natural.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

For that, you\u2019re going to need some German slang.<\/span>
\n\"Common<\/p>\n

Word on the Street<\/span><\/h2>\n

Krass <\/b>\u2013 Like me, you may think of \u201ckrass\u201d as a direct cognate or even loanword of the English \u201ccrass.\u201d But that\u2019s not the case. Think of it more like \u201cwild\u201d or \u201cunbelievable.\u201d As an interjection, it can take the place of English \u201cNo way!\u201d or \u201cWhoa!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Und dann sind die Polizei gekommen! Wie krass war dass den?<\/span><\/i>
\nThen the police came! How crazy was that?!<\/span><\/p>\n

Alter <\/b>\u2013 Your textbook will give you two definitions for this word \u2013 and neither is the same as the English \u201cto alter,\u201d I\u2019m afraid. Instead, as an adjective it means older, and <\/span>one<\/span><\/i> sense of the noun is \u201cage\u201d as in \u201ca ripe old age.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Informally, though, it means something remarkably close to \u201cdude.\u201d A term of affection or a way to get the attention of a male friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Learn<\/a><\/p>\n

Alter! Was war der Name von der neuen Bar?<\/span><\/i>
\nDude! What was the name of that new bar?<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, it\u2019s also an expression of surprise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alter! So teuer!<\/span><\/i>
\nMan! So expensive!<\/span><\/p>\n

By the way, if you find yourself in Vienna, you can instantly win major points with the locals by using the word <\/span>Oida! <\/span><\/i>instead. Same meaning, same usage!<\/span>
\n\"Common<\/p>\n

Online German Slang<\/span><\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s be realistic here \u2013 if you happen to be learning German at home, you may not have so many opportunities to loudly call <\/span>Oida!<\/span><\/i> across the room.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the German content you experience is likely to be things you read online.<\/span><\/p>\n

So it would make sense to learn some of the more informal constructions and even abbreviations that you\u2019re likely to see in casual online German.<\/span><\/p>\n

mMn <\/b>– Short for <\/span>meiner Meinung nach\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

This is just a simple way to express \u201cin my opinion\u2026\u201d Sometimes you\u2019ll see it without the middle M capitalized, and you may (like me) think at first that someone dropped something on their keyboard.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Learn<\/a><\/p>\n

sie ist mmn eine perfekte schauspielerin.<\/span><\/i>
\nIn my opinion, she\u2019s a perfect actress.<\/span><\/p>\n

zl;ng<\/b> – This one does have its roots in English, which is pretty obvious when you see the translation: <\/span>zu lang; nicht gelesen<\/span><\/i>. (too long, not read).<\/span><\/p>\n

mensch, du hast ein echtes aufsatz geschrieben. zl;ng<\/span><\/i>
\nDude, you practically wrote an essay. TL;DR.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note that my informal German examples are written without any capitalization at all. Just like in English, that\u2019s considered a bit too informal for online forum postings, but for chats and texts it\u2019s perfect.<\/span>
\n\"Common<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n

Since I didn\u2019t want this article to be <\/span>zl;ng<\/span><\/i>, I cut it off here instead of diving into the huge world of German slang that\u2019s out there. Start with the ones I mentioned above and you’ll soon start to realize German isn’t that hard to learn.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Once you’ve got the above slang words down packed, you\u2019re going to need a lot more German input in order to progress to the next stage.<\/span><\/p>\n
