Making time, making it fun, and setting small goals will go a long way. When it comes to Japanese, the language has a much different set of characters compared to the English alphabet. It may seem daunting at first, but anyone can learn Japanese, and that includes reading Kanji. The following post will give you some tips and a few resources that can help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where do I start?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese has its own writing system known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/10\/japanese-101-hiragana-vs-katakana\/\">Hiragana and Katakana<\/a> as well as Kanji, which comes from Chinese characters. Hiragana and Katana each have 46 \u201cletters\u201d and are based on a phonetic lettering system. Katakana is used for spelling out foreign words or names and Hiragana is used for Japanese vocabulary. Here is an example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u30cf\u30f3\u30d0\u30fc\u30ac\u30fc Hamburger (foreign word) written in Katakana<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u3072\u3089\u304c\u306a\u3000Hiragana (Japanese word) written in Hiragana<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice how the ga (\u30ac vs \u304c) is similar in Katakana and Hiragana. These two systems are the basis of Japanese. Choosing the path that\u2019s easiest for you will help boost your confidence. Here are the basic vowels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katakana: A \u30a2 \u00a0I \u30a4 U \u30a6 E \u30a8 O \u30aa<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiragana: A \u3042 \u00a0I \u3044 U \u3046 E \u3048 O \u304a<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now let&#8217;s add Kanji to the mix:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u3059\u3057\u3000or\u3000\u5bff\u53f8\u3000Sushi<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u308f\u3055\u3073 or \u5c71\u8475 Wasabi<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u3055\u3051\u3000or \u00a0\u9152\u3000Sake<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-japanese-online\/?utm_source=LingQ Blog&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=blogpost&amp;utm_content=TipsandResourcesforReadingKanji\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176599733 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/lingq-girl.png\" alt=\"Learn Japanese online at LingQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/lingq-girl.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/lingq-girl-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/lingq-girl-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Text and type in Japanese, even if it&#8217;s a few words a day<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enabling a Japanese keyboard in your cellphone can help you autocorrect words when you are starting out and can be useful. Chat with some friends in Japanese. Even if you make mistakes (which you will) the more you can incorporate reading Kanji into your daily life, the faster you&#8217;ll learn. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Read, read, and keep reading Kanji<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning phrases that are relevant to your basic needs is a good start. Thinking about eating, traveling, or asking for directions. Maybe you\u2019ll need vocabulary and phrases like these in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restaurant \u30ec\u30b9\u30c8\u30e9\u30f3<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menu \u30e1\u30cb\u30e5\u30fc<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beer \u30d3\u30fc\u30eb<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cocktail \u30ab\u30af\u30c6\u30eb<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water \u6c34<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juice \u30b8\u30e5\u30fc\u30b9<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee \u30b3\u30fc\u30d2\u30fc<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tea \u304a\u8336<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bathroom \u304a\u624b\u6d17\u3044<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Convenient Store \u30b3\u30f3\u30d3\u30cb\u30a8\u30f3\u30b9\u30b9\u30c8\u30a2 or \u30b3\u30f3\u30d3\u30cb (shortened)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apartment \u30a2\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bus Stop \/ Bus Terminal \u30d0\u30b9\u505c or \u30d0\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc\u30df\u30ca\u30eb<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subway \u3061\u304b\u3066\u3064 or \u5730\u4e0b\u9244<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Station \u99c5<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taxi \u30bf\u30af\u30b7\u30fc<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some signs use Kanji, some signs only use Hiragana and Katakana, and most use a mix of everything. The benefit of reading Kanji is that it makes sentences shorter, even though the characters are challenging to memorize. Don\u2019t fret, all learners start somewhere. Anime, TV shows, and movies with transcripts and Japanese subtitles allow us to read sentences that occur in everyday conversation.<\/span><br \/>\nOne site I highly recommend is Animelon, which includes the Japanese subtitles for each anime. Turning casual situations into lessons, reading menus from at a Japanese restaurant, and so on is a great way to keep your Kanji skills up do date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Be Patient<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are over 2000 Kanji characters used in the Japanese language. However, making a small goal each day goes a long way (also, <strong>you don\u2019t need to learn how to write them which is a huge bonus<\/strong>).\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nWith any language, patience is needed. It&#8217;s perfectly normal to struggle at first but as I mentioned, the more you read using content you enjoy and being able to incorporate Kanji into your daily life (like writing in Japanese on your Facebook wall for example) you&#8217;ll progress faster.
