Probably not. But, next to immersing yourself in the country of Japan itself, it\u2019s arguably one of the most beneficial ways to practice your listening skills and to up your vocabulary. It will absolutely help your non-native ears become acclimated to the natural rhythm and pitch of Japanese. <\/span><br \/>\nNot only that, but many Japanese shows include subtitles (in Japanese) that you can find online. By reading these transcripts, your Japanese skills will progress much faster. Before I tell you more about accessing transcripts, let me first go over 5 Japanese dramas that I think you&#8217;ll enjoy.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Tell Me You Love Me<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u611b\u3057\u3066\u308b\u3068\u8a00\u3063\u3066\u304f\u308c<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176592619 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2-1.png\" alt=\"Tell Me You Love Me\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2-1-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2-1-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This show has the greatest hits from the 90s: Guys wearing high-waisted pants! Scrunchies! Fax machines (which are still a thing in Japan, even today)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this passionate drama, we watch Koji, an impossibly handsome 30-something artist who happens to be deaf, and Hiroko, a bubbly, bright eyed 20-something aspiring actress fall in love. This drama is a great watch purely for the story, but bonus points are given for the fact that you get to learn some Japanese Sign Language (JSL, known in Japanese as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u624b\u8a71\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shuwa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;hand talk&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">along the way. I still remember how to sign <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chigau <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u9055\u3046! \u201cYou\u2019re wrong!\u201d) because of how many times it dramatically got used in their arguments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ah, love.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Samurai Gourmet<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u91ce\u6b66\u58eb\u306e\u30b0\u30eb\u30e1<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176592620 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/4-2.png\" alt=\"Samurai Gourmet\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/4-2.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/4-2-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/4-2-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one\u2019s for you foodies. Follow Takeshi Kusami on his culinary adventures as he gulps down ice cold beer, slurps on miso soup, and tears into croquettes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This show is great for learning vocabulary that\u2019s all things food-related, and, of course, for learning about traditional Japanese meals. Warning: don\u2019t approach this show on an empty stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Song of the Sun<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u30bf\u30a4\u30e8\u30a6\u306e\u6b4c<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-176592621 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3-1.png\" alt=\"Song of the Sun\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3-1-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3-1-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A great way to learn a different language is through song, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taiyou no Uta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides a great opportunity to do so. Kaoru, who suffers from an incurable disease that makes going out into the sun a life-threatening no-no, shares her pain and emotion through song (the film version is also worth a watch).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The great thing about learning a language through song is that the words can be sung slowly, making it easier to remember the meaning behind them than if you\u2019d heard them being said too quickly. The emotion and the story behind the songs may also help you stay motivated to learn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have enough tissue boxes to handle it, I recommend giving this a shot. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Gokusen<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>\u3054\u304f\u305b\u3093<\/b><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-176592622 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5-1.png\" alt=\"Gokusen\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5-1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5-1-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/5-1-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A classic Japanese drama from the early 2000s, and based off of its manga series, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gokusen <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the story of Kumiko Yamaguchi, the granddaughter of a yakuza boss. Hiding her real identity, she teaches at an all-male high school, and comes head to head with some rascally delinquents that, of course, just need a little guidance to straighten them out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the perfect show to watch to learn extremely casual, gruff Japanese (a lot of \u3058\u3083\u306d\u30fc vs.\u3058\u3083\u306a\u3044, for example). The show is excellent as a source of up to date slang and casual Japanese (I&#8217;ve never heard <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yabai <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u30e4\u30d0\u30a4 said so many times when someone thinks something is \u201cinsane&#8221;- whether in a good way or a bad way, depending on the context).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching variety shows and reality TV is a great way to get yourself used to very natural, everyday Japanese conversation.
