{"id":176590831,"date":"2018-07-18T16:12:48","date_gmt":"2018-07-18T23:12:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog-new\/?p=176590831"},"modified":"2026-05-13T13:38:41","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T20:38:41","slug":"chinese-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/chinese-words\/","title":{"rendered":"The Secret to Remembering Chinese Words"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people say that German or Russian words are the hardest to remember, just because they can get so darn long. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean, who wants to sit down and try to memorize a monster like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kugelschreiber<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when all it means is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I contend that Chinese words are somehow even trickier, for the opposite reason.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re so small they can just slip through the cracks in memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this post, I\u2019m going to give you more than just tips and tricks. I\u2019m going to give you a solid foundation in understanding Chinese words\u2013and with that, the highest possible chance that you\u2019ll remember a word after hearing it just once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590861 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/3.png\" alt=\"The Secret to Remembering Chinese Words\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/3.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/3-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/3-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The key to remembering Chinese words is understanding them<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me explain.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re the flashcard type, you probably have a system (computer or otherwise) that lets you review individual words in a spaced-repetition way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means exposing yourself to the word several times over a period of time, maybe twice on the first day, once on the second day, once on the fourth, the sixth, the tenth, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This spacing effect really does work extremely well, b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ut transferring that remembered flashcard into real-life language knowledge is a necessary step that doesn\u2019t always happen perfectly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even better is if you can become aware of how the Chinese word works\u2013its definition, its connotation, and maybe even its etymology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590859 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/1.png\" alt=\"The Secret to Remembering Chinese Words\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/1.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/1-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/1-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The elements of Chinese words<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>The Character<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The very first thing you\u2019re exposed to is likely <\/span><b>the character<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the \u5b57 (z\u00ec).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use a high-quality online character dictionary like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Wiktionary:Main_Page\">Wiktionary<\/a> or the Outlier Chinese Dictionary to reveal the character\u2019s structure and etymology. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, this character \u5b57 is a representation of a child under a roof. It originally meant \u201cto nurture, to guard\u201d but its modern definition comes from a gradual change in meaning\u2013from \u201cnurture\u201d to \u201cproduce\u201d to \u201ccreate\u201d to \u201cwritten character,\u201d roughly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning this history behind the word will not only help you to remember this one word &#8211; it will help you learn the logic behind the construction of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chinese character. <\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLn7iYKq-G3PIrFBozQb7yLzicNGfITO8N\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176600274 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chinese_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg\" alt=\"Learn Chinese with the LingQ podcast\" width=\"870\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chinese_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chinese_Blog-Banner-1-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chinese_Blog-Banner-1-768x216.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chinese_Blog-Banner-1-600x169.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Chinese_Blog-Banner-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pronunciation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2018\/02\/26\/chinese-pronunciation\/\">Chinese pronunciation<\/a> comes next<b>. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mandarin Chinese has 416 possible syllables multiplied by four possible tones. (Note that there are many syllables which only appear in one tone, and many pronunciations which are extremely rare or absent entirely in speech and writing)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By fully understanding the rules governing Chinese pronunciation\u2013whether you\u2019re learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/07\/chinese-dialects\/\">Mandarin, Cantonese, or another variety<\/a>\u00a0\u2013you\u2019ll make it much easier to remember the accurate pronunciation the very first time you hear the word or read the pinyin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about it, if you couldn\u2019t tell the difference between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">san <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019d be much more likely to confuse the two words because they would fit in the same sound-category in your mind.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same is true of the tones, by the way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re even a little shaky about recognizing or producing the tones or sounds of Chinese, it\u2019d be a good idea to go review some of the rules of Chinese pronunciation either online or with a tutor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-chinese-online\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176593350 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-4.png\" alt=\"Learn Chinese online at LingQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-4.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-4-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-4-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>You need a base in Chinese before you really start picking up words<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, there\u2019s no shortcut for this particular point.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s just the facts, the more words you know in a language, the easier it will be for you to learn more of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the hardest Chinese words for me to remember when I began learning was \u201ctaxi stand\u201d or \u51fa\u79df\u8f66\u7ad9 (ch\u016bz\u016bch\u0113 zh\u00e0n). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first time I saw and heard it, it zipped right through my brain and left no trace. It was a meaningless collection of lines and sounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I eventually learned it by breaking it down. First I practiced the pronunciation of each character individually &#8211; \u7ad9, then \u00a0\u8f66\u7ad9, then \u51fa\u79df\u8f66 (this took a long time), and finally \u51fa\u79df\u8f66\u7ad9. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always use that back-to-front method for tricky pronunciations, by the way. By starting from the end each time, you practice the end of the word so many times that you can zoom through the word easily once you get past the beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next I thought hard about the characters. \u7ad9 is easy enough as it literally means \u201cto stand,\u201d and we just so happen to use that same word in English for a taxi stand\u2013it\u2019s where the taxis are standing before they drive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u51fa\u79df\u8f66 (taxi) has a noun, \u8f66 (car), as the last character, so I know that it\u2019s a type of car. And \u51fa\u79df means \u201cto rent.\u201d It\u2019s true, it could mean a rental car, but by this time I had associated the word \u201ctaxi\u201d with the Chinese word so many times in looking up all these definitions that I was confident I wouldn\u2019t confuse the meaning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This breakdown strategy was a perfect forerunner to learning about things that shared concepts with this word.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By that I mean stands of any type, cars of any type, and rentals of any type. Every time I came across one of these concepts in the future, I was able to link it back to my breakdown of \u51fa\u79df\u8f66\u7ad9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, they say that you need an emotional connection to a word to really cement it into your mind. Some memory or feeling or image that you can connect to the word in order to understand it just as a native speaker does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had that moment in 2016, around 2:30 AM when my train arrived in the Chinese city of Xi\u2019an. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590862 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Untitled-design-32.png\" alt=\"The Secret to Remembering Chinese Words\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Untitled-design-32.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Untitled-design-32-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Untitled-design-32-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I didn\u2019t have any idea how far I was from my hotel or how I should begin making my way there.
