In this post, I&#8217;ve listed a handful of Japanese words we all use in English \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Japanese food<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Japanese restaurants continue to pop up all over North America and I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve eaten at one before. Below are a few words that you&#8217;ve probably come across and some new ones that you should know next time you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/16\/japanese-phrases\/\">eat out.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hibachi (\u706b\u9262, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hibachi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">):<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lots of hibachi &#8211; style restaurants are in America, hibachi refers to a special type of grill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sushi (\u5bff\u53f8, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sushi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">):<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most should know what sushi is, even if you don&#8217;t like it. It includes rice and raw foods, especially raw fish, oftentimes rolled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sashimi (\u523a\u8eab, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sashimi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">):<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very fresh fish sliced pretty thinly, you can get this at various (perhaps pricey) Japanese-style restaurants around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teriyaki (\u7167\u308a\u713c\u304d, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teriyaki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This refers to foods cooked in that sweet sauce you know and perhaps love. Though in English, it is used to cook all sorts of meats, it&#8217;s mostly just chicken in Japan that is cooked in this way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tempura (\u5929\u9ea9\u7f85 or \u5929\u3077\u3089, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tenpura<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This should be a fairly familiar term and specifies a certain type of deep-fry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panko (\u30d1\u30f3\u7c89, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panko<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): On a related note, this refers to a certain type of breading made with white bread without crust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edamame (\u679d\u8c46, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">edamame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): Those soybeans that is served whole in the pod, you know the ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adzuki beans (\u5c0f\u8c46, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azuki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This refers to a certain type of bean often used in Japanese sweets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miso (\u5473\u564c, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miso<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This refers to a bean paste. Perhaps you&#8217;ve had some miso soup before at your local Asian style restaurant?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-176593866 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-11.png\" alt=\"Sushi\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-11.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-11-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-11-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tofu (\u8c46\u8150, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toufu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This is a bean curd type thing that you can probably get at your local supermarket. It can be used in vegetarian dishes in the place of meat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramen (\u30e9\u30fc\u30e1\u30f3, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ramen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This refers to the Japanese spin on a Chinese noodle soup that we all know and presumably love due to how available and affordable it is to get instant ramen in so many places.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sake (\u9152, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sake<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): In Japan, this refers to alcoholic beverages in general, but in English this refers to \u65e5\u672c\u9152 (nihonshu), a certain type of wine brewed with rice. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Art and Entertainment<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various arts and such have kept their name from Japan and made their way into the English-speaking world. Here are some examples of what I mean:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haiku (\u4ff3\u53e5, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">haiku<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This refers to a short poem you probably know of, wherein you have three lines of 5-7-5 syllables. Technically, you&#8217;re supposed to count each \u62cd (haku) or mora, which is the length of a short syllable in English, instead of each syllable, but that&#8217;s splitting hairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanka (\u77ed\u6b4c, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tanka<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This is also a type of short poem you may have studied in literature class, but is probably less well-known than the haiku. Similarly, you count each \u62cd (haku) or mora as you do in a Haiku, but with the rhythm of 5-7-5-7-7 as opposed to 5-7-5 in a haiku.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karaoke (\u30ab\u30e9\u30aa\u30b1, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">karaoke<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): A popular pass time wherein people try to sing along with a popular song. Whereas elsewhere there may be just \u201ckaraoke night\u201d at a bar or such, there are many places that are pretty dedicated to purely providing booths for karaoke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-176593867 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-12.png\" alt=\"karaoke\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-12.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-12-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-12-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koto (\u7434, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">koto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): A traditional Japanese instrument with 13 strings. If you&#8217;ve never run into one, you may not know about this, but many have probably heard the term before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shamisen (\u4e09\u5473\u7dda, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shamisen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): Again, if you don&#8217;t have an interest in instruments, it&#8217;s possible you don&#8217;t know about this one, but I think many do know of it. It&#8217;s a musical instrument with three strings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kabuki (\u6b4c\u821e\u4f0e, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kabuki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This refers to traditional Japanese Kabuki theatre. Perhaps you&#8217;ve heard some of the sound effects, as they have a fairly unique character.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sumi-e (\u58a8\u7d75, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sumie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This refers to Japanese ink painting. You&#8217;ve probably heard of it in art class. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Origami (\u6298\u308a\u7d19, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">origami<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): Paper folding. You&#8217;ve probably tried some origami yourself, and know how difficult it can be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geisha (\u82b8\u8005, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">geisha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): Traditional Japanese entertainer, as you may already know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonsai (\u76c6\u683d, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bonsai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This refers to tray gardening and dealing with that little tree, I&#8217;m sure you know of it and may have seen some bonsai trees yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manga (\u6f2b\u753b, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): In English, this refers to Japanese comics. In Japan, however, it refers to comics in general. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-japanese-online\/?utm_source=LingQ Blog&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=blogpost&amp;utm_content=JapaneseWordsWeUseinEnglish\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176597787 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png\" alt=\"Learn Japanese online at LingQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Warriors and Martial Arts<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout time, cultures all over the world have found the need to defend themselves from violence. This has resulted in many different types of warriors and styles of fighting. Here are some from Japan:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shogun (\u5c06\u8ecd, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shougun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This refers to the \u201cgeneral\u201d in feudal Japan. For a time they were essentially serving as the rulers of Japan as they were more powerful than even the emperor, as you may know from history class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ninja (\u5fcd\u8005, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ninja<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): Covert operatives in feudal Japan. We all know them from media representation of ninja. They were technically a class of samurai. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176593868 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-13.png\" alt=\"ninja\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-13.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-13-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Blog-Post-13-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samurai (\u4f8d, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">samurai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): We also know these from the media as they are displayed often as sword-fighting warriors. They were the warriors of the Edo period of Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aikido (\u5408\u6c17\u9053, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aikidou<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): A certain type of martial art that is pretty popular in Japan. It is often treated with a lot less respect and is seen as one of the \u201cweaker\u201d martial arts in United States martial arts circles. Regardless, I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve heard of it, perhaps due to a certain Mr. Seagal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jiu Jitsu (\u67d4\u8853, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">juujutsu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): This martial art is pretty classic and revolves around close combat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judo (\u67d4\u9053, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">juudou<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): The sport of Judo, a martial art that focuses on balance and leverage in conjunction with quick movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sumo (\u76f8\u64b2, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sumo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): The sport wherein you try to push the opponent out of the ring. It probably conjures up images of large, rotund Japanese men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dojo (\u9053\u5834, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doujo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): Where martial arts training happens! You might have a few dojos around you! <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Miscellaneous<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some other Japanese words you know from their being used in English:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tycoon (\u5927\u541b, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taikun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): In Japanese, \u5927\u541b (taikun) refers to a high commander. It would be taken and later used to refer to wealthy business leaders in the English-speaking world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kimono (\u7740\u7269, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kimono<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): The long robe that is often worn to special events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geta (\u4e0b\u99c4, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">geta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): Those stereotypical wooden clogs! You&#8217;ve probably seen this on a movie or TV show by now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Futon (\u5e03\u56e3, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">futon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): A flat mattress. In English, it can also refer to a sofa that changes directly into a bed and vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tsunami (\u6d25\u6ce2, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tsunami<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): A tidal wave. I&#8217;m sure you know of this natural disaster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karoshi (\u904e\u52b4\u6b7b, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">karoushi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): Death from overwork. Perhaps you haven&#8217;t heard of this one, which would probably be for the best, but many know of Japan&#8217;s karoshi problem, and there&#8217;s even been legislation to help it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudoku (\u6570\u72ec, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suudoku<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): Those number puzzles with all the squares, you&#8217;ve probably seen it before. It can be quite difficult to do! When I was younger, I spent quite a lot of time with these puzzles. One could say that for a child, I was a sudoku geek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otaku (\u30aa\u30bf\u30af, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">otaku<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): In Japan, otaku refers to a geek of anything in general. In English, it refers more specifically to Japanimation\/manga geeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emoji (\u7d75\u6587\u5b57, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emoji<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): You know emojis. I&#8217;m sure some of you know them <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all too well. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopefully Japanese doesn&#8217;t seem too foreign to those reading this article. It&#8217;s all too familiar to us English speakers!
