The easiest is by saying \u201c<\/span><b>Przepraszam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d It can mean both \u201cI\u2019m sorry\u201d and \u201cExcuse me\u201d. The use of \u201c<\/span><b>Przepraszam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d as \u201cI\u2019m sorry\u201d will be discussed later on in the post. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Przepraszam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, jak dojecha\u0107 do centrum (miasta)? &#8211; Excuse me, how do I get to the city center?<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Przepraszam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nie chcia\u0142em (male speaker) \/\/ nie chcia\u0142am (female speaker). &#8211; I\u2019m sorry, I didn\u2019t mean to.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way of asking for something is by expressing the wish with the construction equivalent to the English phrase \u201cI\u2019d like\u201d: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Chcia\u0142bym<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (male speaker) \/\/ <\/span><b>Chcia\u0142abym<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (female speaker) kupi\u0107 t\u0119 ksi\u0105\u017ck\u0119. &#8211; \u00a0I\u2019d like to buy this book.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also simply say \u201c<\/span><b>Poprosz\u0119<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d which doesn\u2019t have an exact English translation but can be understood as \u201cI\u2019d like\u201d: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Poprosz\u0119<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bilet jednorazowy. &#8211; I\u2019d like a single ticket.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590785 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ticket.jpg\" alt=\"Thank you in Polish and Other Polite Expressions\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ticket.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ticket-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ticket-600x257.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet another way of asking for things is by using the Polish equivalent of \u201cCan you\u2026?\u201d and more polite \u201cCould you&#8230;?\u201d. In an informal context you\u2019d say:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Czy mo\u017cesz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> po\u017cyczy\u0107 mi 2 z\u0142ote? &#8211; Can you lend me 2 PLN? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Czy m\u00f3g\u0142by\u015b<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> poda\u0107 mi s\u00f3l? &#8211; Could you pass me the salt?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a formal context it\u2019s much more polite to use the second version (Could&#8230;?), formally addressing the person as \u201cMr.\u201d or \u201cMs.\u201d as presented in the following examples: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czy <\/span><b>m\u00f3g\u0142by <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mi <\/span><b>Pan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pom\u00f3c? (when speaking to a man) &#8211; Could you help me(, sir)?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czy <\/span><b>mog\u0142aby <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mi <\/span><b>Pani <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pom\u00f3c? (when speaking to a woman) &#8211; Could you help me(, Ma\u2019am)?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of the equivalent of \u201cCan\u2026?\u201d is acceptable and you\u2019ll hear it around. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czy <\/span><b>mo\u017ce <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mi <\/span><b>Pan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pom\u00f3c? (when speaking to a man) &#8211; Can you help me(, sir)?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czy <\/span><b>mo\u017ce <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mi <\/span><b>Pani <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pom\u00f3c? (I\u2019ve bought you a newspaper.)<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Dzi\u0119kuj\u0119<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Thank you.)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also express more gratitude by saying \u201c<\/span><b>Dzi\u0119kuj\u0119 bardzo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, which means \u201cThank you very much\u201d. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, you could say \u201c<\/span><b>Dzi\u0119kuj\u0119 Pani<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d when thanking a female in a formal context or \u201c<\/span><b>Dzi\u0119kuj\u0119 Panu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d to a man. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or \u201c<\/span><b>Dzi\u0119kuj\u0119 bardzo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d things are a bit more complicated with the Mr.\/Ms. jumping in the middle. Similarly, \u201c<\/span><b>Dzi\u0119kuj\u0119 bardzo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d can be used in an informal context or replaced with \u201c<\/span><b>Dzi\u0119ki wielkie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever in doubt, you should use the more formal expression. Polish people don\u2019t use \u201cyou\u201d as often and easily as English speakers do and using it in the wrong context will be considered rude. You wouldn\u2019t say \u201cDzi\u0119ki\u201d thanking a shop assistant unless they\u2019re your age and you feel like being very friendly (or flirty!). <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Informal phrases, in general, are reserved for acquaintances, friends and close family. It\u2019s always a good idea to listen out for how a group of people addresses one another before you become informal with them. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are other ways of expressing gratitude informally, other than just saying \u201cthank you\u201d such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Co ja bym bez Ciebie zrobi\u0142!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as a male speaker) \/\/ <\/span><b>Co ja bym bez Ciebie zrobi\u0142a!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as a female speaker) \u00a0&#8211; What would I do without you!<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Jestem Ci (naprawd\u0119) wdzi\u0119czny<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (as a male speaker) \/\/ <\/span><b>Jestem Ci (naprawd\u0119) wdzi\u0119czna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (I\u2019ve cleaned the kitchen.)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dzi\u0119kuj\u0119. (Thank you.)<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Nie ma za co<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! (You\u2019re welcome!)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other informal expressions that can be used to say that it\u2019s not a big deal include:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Spoko!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; No worries!<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Nie ma sprawy!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; No problem!<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Ciesz\u0119 si\u0119, \u017ce mog\u0142em Ci pom\u00f3c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as a male speaker) \/\/ <\/span><b>Ciesz\u0119 si\u0119, \u017ce mog\u0142am Ci pom\u00f3c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as a female speaker) &#8211; I\u2019m happy I could help you.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Ciesz\u0119 si\u0119, \u017ce mog\u0142em pom\u00f3c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as a male speaker) \/\/ <\/span><b>Ciesz\u0119 si\u0119, \u017ce mog\u0142am pom\u00f3c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as a female speaker) &#8211; I\u2019m happy I could help.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only the last expression can be used in a formal context. It can also be modified to an even more polite version. It may seem a bit complicated as the form will be different for male and female speaker as well as depending on the gender of the person you\u2019re talking to. Let\u2019s say that you\u2019ve spoken informally to someone unknown and much older than you, addressing them as \u201cyou\u201d. Mistakes happen, you\u2019re still learning, after all! What you could say is: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Przepraszam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nie m\u00f3wi\u0119 dobrze po polsku. &#8211; I\u2019m sorry. I don\u2019t speak Polish well. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to apologize more profoundly\u00a0 by saying that you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sorry, you could use one of the expressions below:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Przepraszam bardzo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8211; I\u2019m really sorry.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Przepraszam Pani\u0105 bardzo.
