This is just one example of a tongue twister.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many try to repeat a tongue twister until they master it perfectly. This is a phenomenon that stretches into different cultures and languages, and Japanese is no exception.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Called \u65e9\u53e3\u8a00\u8449 (hayakuchi kotoba), these popular Japanese tongue twisters are sure to leave your tongue in knots!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Raw Goods<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you asked someone in Japan for a Japanese tongue twister, they would likely tell you this one. It is the first Japanese tongue twister that I mastered, as well. It goes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u751f\u9ea6\u751f\u7c73\u751f\u5375 (namamugi namagome namatamago)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means, <strong>\u201craw wheat, raw rice, raw eggs\u201d<\/strong>. This is one of the easier and shorter tongue twisters. They get tougher from here!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Artsy Priest<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This next one is also pretty popular. It goes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u574a\u4e3b\u304c\u5c4f\u98a8\u306b\u4e0a\u624b\u306b\u574a\u4e3b\u306e\u7d75\u3092\u63cf\u3044\u305f (bouzu ga byoubu ni jouzu ni bouzu no e (w)o kaita)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means, <strong>\u201cA priest skillfully drew a picture of a priest on a folding screen\u201d<\/strong>. Keep on your toes if you don&#8217;t want to mess this one up, as it&#8217;s harder than it looks! Also, be careful! There are other tongue twisters that use the same colour but change what&#8217;s being described, like swapping out \u5dfb\u7d19 (makigami, scroll) with \u30d1\u30b8\u30e3\u30de (pajama, pajamas) or the like. The order of the colours can get switched around, too.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>The Stuck Nail<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This next one may require a bit of focus to get right. It goes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u96a3\u306e\u5ba2\u306f\u826f\u304f\u67ff\u98df\u3046\u5ba2\u3060 (tonari no kyaku wa yoku kaki kuu kyaku da)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means, <strong>\u201cthe customer next to me is one who eats a lot of persimmons.\u201d<\/strong> If you&#8217;re really good at tongue twisters and think these have all been a cinch so far, then stick around. It goes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> \u65b0\u6625\u30b7\u30e3\u30f3\u30bd\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30fc (shinshun shanson sho-)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means, <strong>\u201cNew Year Chanson show\u201d <\/strong>and&nbsp;refers to a specific New Year show in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Inspection, the \u201cS\/Sh\u201d Infection<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one is also reminiscent of Sally\u2019s seashell selling business:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u65b0\u8a2d\u8a3a\u7642\u5ba4\u8996\u5bdf (shinsetsu shinryoushitsu shisatsu)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That s\/sh stuff can be a huge problem, yikes! It goes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u9e7f\u3082\u30ab\u30e2\u30b7\u30ab\u3082\u9e7f\u306e\u4ef2\u9593, \u3057\u304b\u3057\u30a2\u30b7\u30ab\u306f\u9e7f\u3067\u306f\u306a\u3044 (shika mo kamoshika mo shika no nakama, shikashi ashika wa shika de wa nai)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This roughly means,<strong> \u201cboth the deer and the antelope are part of the deer family, but surely the sea lion is not a deer\u201d<\/strong>. An easy observation to make, but it&#8217;s not quite as easy to say!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>How Many Chickens?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This next one is difficult because of a lot of repetitive sounds:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u88cf\u5ead\u306b\u306f\u4e8c\u7fbd, \u5ead\u306b\u306f\u4e8c\u7fbd\u9d8f\u304c\u3044\u308b (uraniwa ni wa niwa, niwa ni wa niwa niwatori ga iru)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means roughly, <strong>\u201cThere are two chickens in the backyard and two chickens in the front yard\u201d<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Momomomomomomomo<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This next one is also difficult because of a lot of repetition. It goes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u674e\u3082\u6843\u3082\u6843\u306e\u3046\u3061 (sumomo mo momo mo momo no uchi)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means, <strong>\u201cboth Japanese plums and peaches are in the peach family\u201d<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>A Nice Shoulder Rub<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This next one has an almost poetic feel to it, with the placement of the repetitive syllables:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u751f\u6696\u304b\u3044\u80a9\u53e9\u304d\u5668 (nama atatakai kata tataki ki)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This roughly<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">translates to, <strong>\u201ca warm shoulder massaging machine\u201d.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" class=\"wp-image-176598659\" style=\"width: 750px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/21.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/21.png 1280w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/21-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/21-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/21-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/21-600x338.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>The Two Deserve Each Other<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following might seem easier when you just read it if you aren&#8217;t paying close attention, but try to say it, then it becomes harder:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u99d2\u8fbc\u306e\u308f\u304c\u307e\u307e\u8005, \u4e2d\u91ce\u306e\u6020\u3051\u8005 (komagome no wagamama mono, nakano no nokamake mono)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means, <strong>\u201cKomagome\u2019s jealousy, Nakano\u2019s laziness\u201d<\/strong>. They may deserve each other, but they probably would never get along. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Patents in Tokyo<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one has similar sounds that are slightly different, making it sort of hard to say. It goes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u6771\u4eac\u7279\u8a31\u8a31\u53ef\u5c40\u5c40\u9577 (toukyou tokkyo kyokakyoku kyokuchou)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This translates roughly to, <strong>\u201cthe Tokyo Patent authorization bureau manager\u201d<\/strong>. Note: this is not a real position, it&#8217;s just difficult and fun to say.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>The Mystery of the Banana<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This next one is just funny to think about, in addition to it twisting our tongues:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u30d0\u30ca\u30ca\u306e\u8b0e\u306f\u307e\u3060\u8b0e\u306a\u306e\u3060\u305e (banana no nazo wa mada nazo na no da zo)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means, <strong>\u201cthe mystery of the banana is still a mystery\u201d<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Bamboo, Bamboo<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This last one is the longest on this list, so it may really take some focus to get through!:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u3053\u306e\u7af9\u57a3\u306b\u7af9\u7acb\u3066\u639b\u3051\u305f\u306e\u306f\u7af9\u7acb\u3066\u639b\u3051\u305f\u304b\u3063\u305f\u304b\u3089, \u7af9\u7acb\u3066\u639b\u3051\u305f (kono takegaki ni take tatekaketa no wa take tatekaketakatta kara, take tatekaketa)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you make it through?
