There\u2019s the inevitable moment in almost every conversation when the person saying something stops or breaks their current sentence apart with a word or two that have absolutely nothing to do with what they\u2019re talking about. We understand what they\u2019re trying to say and ignore those silly little words in between. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

These words are known as \u201cfiller words\u201d, but for most learners, they\u2019re: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cum\u201d, \u201cuh\u201d, \u201cer\u201d, \u201cah\u201d, \u201clike\u201d, \u201ctotally\u201d, \u201cyou know\u201d, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

In English, we also refer to them as \u201cdiscourse markers\u201d, \u201cpause fillers\u201d or \u201chesitation forms\u201d. In general speech, the role of filler words is limited to human nature and nothing more than that. This means that we only say these words because we\u2019re thinking about what to say next, they \u201cfill the silence\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"Learn<\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

They\u2019re meaningless, in a sense. Even more so, they\u2019re barely noticeable. Let\u2019s take a look:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

So, uh… I found this new bag online and it\u2019s like\u2026 awesome in every way, you know. But, um\u2026 I don\u2019t think I\u2019m going to buy it because it\u2019s like waaay to expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

If you were listening to this sentence in a conversation<\/a>, you probably wouldn’t even notice the filler words involved. It\u2019s almost like they\u2019re not even there, as they don\u2019t really seem to have a purpose or meaning in the given context. However, if we dig a bit deeper, we\u2019ll find examples of filler words being much more important to speech and language than one can see on the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, why are filler words in English so important?<\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

Uh\u2026 for one, native speakers use them<\/a> – like, a lot! If used correctly and not all too frequently, they can become an English learner\u2019s best friend. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Truth be told, I didn’t noticed this myself until maybe my first year of college when I met new people from the U.S. and U.K. So, when I started to use filler words in my day-to-day conversations with them more frequently, I started to notice that I sounded just like them. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Many linguists argue that the use of filler words has a psychological effect that helps speakers say what they want a lot easier, even when they need some time to think about. Moreover, different scenarios cause us to use different filler words, so they\u2019re not all exactly the same. <\/span><\/p>\n

In a nutshell, each filler word in English has its own purpose and a specific time when it can be used \u201csmoothly\u201d, which begs the question: <\/span><\/p>\n

Which filler words should you use and when to sound more like a native?<\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

As previously mentioned, filler words can be used for a number of reasons. In this part, we\u2019ll take a look at some of the most frequently used filler words in English, their purpose, and when English learners should use them to sound less like robots and more like native speakers. Without further ado, let\u2019s dive right into the list.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Well, Uh, Um, Er (used to gather one\u2019s thoughts and gain some time)<\/span><\/h3>\n

Well, we can get a new pet if you\u2019d like.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know. Um, maybe we can try that.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Note: <\/span>During longer conversations or presentations, English speakers also tend to use \u201cbasically\u201d for the same purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Okay (to express agreement or suggest action)<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/b>Okay, we can do that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Okay, let\u2019s try that.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

So (to start a new topic or summarize something)<\/span><\/h3>\n

So, when are we going to acknowledge that dinosaurs exist? <\/span><\/p>\n

So, what we need is two more cars and one more driver to make this trip fun.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tell me something (to introduce a direct question)<\/span><\/h3>\n

Guys, tell me something, which one of you scratched the principal\u2019s car?<\/span><\/p>\n

Jasmin, tell us something, can filler words be used all the time?<\/span><\/p>\n

You see (to add conversational flare in longer texts or conversations)<\/span><\/h3>\n

You see, filler words can be used for a variety of reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n

You see, this is exactly how learning a language is supposed to be.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

P.S. <\/span>I\u2019m guilty of using \u201cyou see\u201d a lot in both my writing and speech. I don\u2019t know, I guess it\u2019s a genuine filler phrase that just makes my readers or listeners feel like I\u2019m truly talking to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

I guess, I suppose (to express hesitation or uncertainty)<\/span><\/h3>\n

I know I planned to go to the gym later on, but I guess I can go grab a quick meal at McDonald\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

We lost the game but I suppose we can still celebrate our participating in the competition for three years in a row now.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note: <\/span>In English, \u201csuppose\u201d is often used in more formal settings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Certainly, we could have done some things differently, but here we are.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note:<\/span> Many filler words \u201ccan\u201d have literal meanings in sentences. It\u2019s when they\u2019re used as actual words instead of just filling the silence. Here\u2019s an example with the word \u201clike\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n

Molly is exactly like Jenna! Neither of them listens to me! <\/span>(not a filler word)<\/span><\/p>\n

Molly is like so annoying right now! She doesn\u2019t listen to like anything I say. <\/span>(filler word)<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, let\u2019s sum it all up\u2026<\/span><\/h2>\n

Filler words in English are words that don\u2019t really add any value to a sentence they\u2019re used in. They\u2019re just there to \u201cfill the silence\u201d. However, they also play a very important psychological role in speech, which helps speakers have some time to think about what to say next while also \u201cfilling\u201d that time with words that won\u2019t get in the way of others understanding them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Nonetheless, filler words shouldn\u2019t be used all the time, as they might get in the way of a conversation running smoothly. So, basically, uh\u2026 what I\u2019m trying to say is that um\u2026 you don\u2019t want to like make the other person that um\u2026 well, you don\u2019t want the person talking to you feel so\u2026 well, uncomfortable. Let\u2019s try to keep all of this in mind during our next conversation in English. <\/span><\/p>\n
