As anyone who has ever been to a Francophone country will tell you, there\u2019s the French you learn in the classroom and there\u2019s the French that native speakers actually use.<\/span>
\n Like any language, everyday spoken French is full of slang, abbreviations, and oh yeah, this tricky little thing called <\/span>verlan<\/span><\/i>. Learning slang is an important step toward sounding more like a native speaker, regardless of whether you\u2019re still a beginner or a more advanced student.<\/span>
\nOf course, there has to be a little caveat: French slang is hard to teach for all of the reasons that you might imagine: it can vary by region or generation, and it changes quickly. The best way to keep on top of slang vocabulary is by consuming a lot of current and authentic media<\/a>, like films, TV series, or listening to French songs<\/a>. However, there are some words and expressions that seem to be mainstays in the language, so if you want to get by in a French speaking country, this is what you\u2019ll have to know about <\/span>l\u2019argot<\/span><\/i> (slang).<\/span>

These are words and phrases that you\u2019re likely to hear on a near-daily basis in France, so they\u2019re definitely need-to-know!<\/span><\/p>\n

Un mec \/ une nana<\/b><\/h3>\n

Un mec<\/span><\/i> is slang for \u201ca guy\u201d and <\/span>une nana <\/span><\/i>is \u201ca girl\u201d. As in:<\/span><\/p>\n

C\u2019est un mec que je connais depuis longtemps. <\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nI\u2019ve known that guy for a long time.<\/span>

Kiffer<\/b><\/h3>\n

Borrowed from Arabic, the word \u201ckiffer\u201d means \u201cto love\u201d. It\u2019s conjugated like an -er verb.<\/span><\/p>\n

Je kiffe le nouvel album de Stromae<\/span><\/i>! \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> I love Stromae\u2019s new CD!<\/span>

Bosser\/taffer<\/b><\/h3>\n

Two verbs that mean \u201cto work\u201d in French. You can also use the word <\/span>le boulot<\/span><\/i> to refer to the noun <\/span>le travail<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Je peux rien faire vendredi, je bosse tout le week-end<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>
\nI can\u2019t do anything on Friday, I\u2019m working all weekend.<\/span>
\nOn voit jamais J\u00e9r\u00f4me, il est toujours au boulot<\/span><\/i> \/ <\/span>il taffe tout le temps.<\/span><\/i>
\nWe never see Jerome, he\u2019s always at work \/ he works all the time.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Impeccable!<\/b><\/h3>\n

Or \u201cperfect\u201d. If you buy something at the store and you manage to pay with the exact change, the cashier will probably say this to you. A similar expression (though slightly \u2018younger\u2019) is <\/span>nickel<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Son rendez-vous est \u00e0 8h00 et il est arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 7h59. Impeccable!<\/span><\/i>
\nHis meeting is at 8:00 and he arrived at 7:59. Perfect!<\/span>
\nOn se r\u00e9unit \u00e0 22h00 devant le cin\u00e9ma?\u00a0<\/span><\/i>C\u2019est nickel!<\/span><\/i>
\nLet\u2019s say we meet at 11, in front of the movie theater?\u00a0<\/span>Perfect!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"Your<\/p>\n

\u00c7a craint \/ C\u2019est nul!<\/b><\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re really displeased with something and want to express your displeasure, <\/span>\u00e7a craint<\/span><\/i> or <\/span>c\u2019est nul <\/span><\/i>will do the job! These translate to \u201cthat sucks\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bouffer<\/b><\/h3>\n

Perhaps borrowed from the word <\/span>buffet<\/span><\/i> \u2013 as in, all-you-can-eat \u2013 the verb <\/span>bouffer<\/span><\/i> means \u201cto eat\u201d in French slang. <\/span>La bouffe<\/span><\/i> is the noun to accompany it.<\/span><\/p>\n

On a bien bouff\u00e9 hier chez Chlo\u00e9!<\/span><\/i> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nWe really ate well at Chloe\u2019s place yesterday!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dalle \/ j\u2019ai la dalle<\/b><\/h3>\n

Dalle <\/span><\/i>is basically \u201cnothing\u201d in French. You\u2019ll hear it used in a sentence as <\/span>que dalle<\/span><\/i>, or you can use the expression <\/span>j\u2019ai la dalle <\/span><\/i>to express that you\u2019re super hungry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le cours de maths hier? J\u2019ai compris que dalle<\/span><\/i>!<\/span>
\nMath class yesterday? I didn\u2019t understand anything!<\/span>
\nJ\u2019ai pas bouff\u00e9 depuis ce matin, j\u2019ai la dalle!<\/span><\/i>
\nI haven\u2019t eaten since this morning, I\u2019m starving!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Learn<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Faire gaffe<\/b><\/h3>\n

To <\/span>Faire gaffe <\/span><\/i>is to \u201cpay attention\u201d or \u201cbe careful\u201d. It\u2019s used like a command, so you\u2019ll need to conjugate the verb <\/span>faire<\/span><\/i> if you want to use it!<\/span><\/p>\n

Fais gaffe \u00e0 Pigalle le soir!<\/span><\/i> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nBe careful in Pigalle at night!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

La vache!<\/b><\/h3>\n

Literally <\/span>la vache<\/span><\/i> means \u201cthe cow\u201d, but in conversation the exclamation is used as an equivalent to \u201coh my god!\u201d or \u201choly cow!\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Je suis tomb\u00e9 les escaliers devant tout le monde \u00e0 la Tour Eiffel! La vache..<\/span><\/i>
\nI fell down the stairs in front of everyone at the Eiffel Tower! (Oh) my god\u2026<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Le fric, le bl\u00e9, la thune<\/b><\/h3>\n

Cash. Dough. Moolah. All of the above are ways to say \u201cmoney\u201d in French. Though <\/span>l\u2019argent<\/span><\/i> is the term in <\/span>fran\u00e7ais standard<\/span><\/i> (standard French), you\u2019re likely to hear <\/span>le fric, le bl\u00e9 <\/span><\/i>or <\/span>la thune<\/span><\/i> just as often, if not moreso.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il a beaucoup de fric, ce mec. Il bosse comme un fou<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>
\nHe\u2019s got a lot of money, that guy. He works like crazy.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Similarly, you\u2019ll often hear the word <\/span>balles<\/b> substituted for <\/span>euros<\/b> when talking about the price of an object.<\/span><\/p>\n

Un appartement en plein centre de Paris? \u00c7a te co\u00fbtera mille balles par mois, minimum.<\/span><\/i>
\nAn apartment in the middle of Paris? That\u2019ll cost you a thousand bucks a month, minimum.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Verlan: The French \u201cPig Latin\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n

While French, like English, has a huge lexicon of slang vocabulary words that don\u2019t look or sound anything like their <\/span>fran\u00e7ais standard<\/span><\/i> equivalents, it also has something that English <\/span>doesn\u2019t<\/span><\/i> have: verlan.<\/span>
\nVerlan is a bit like Pig Latin in the sense that it involves transposing the syllables of one word \u2013 by moving the last syllable to the beginning to create an entirely new word.<\/span>
\nIn fact, the word <\/span>verlan<\/span><\/i> is an example: it comes from re-syllabifying the word <\/span>l\u2019envers<\/span><\/i> (the inverse). However, verlan has become an extremely common practice in French in a way that Pig Latin never did in English, and you\u2019ll hear quite a lot of it in France. <\/span>
\nHere are a couple of must-know expressions that use verlan.<\/span>
\n\"Your<\/p>\n

Ouf<\/b><\/h3>\n

Ouf <\/span><\/i>is the result of inverting the syllables of the word <\/span>fou<\/span><\/i>, or \u201ccrazy\u201d. It\u2019s often used as an interjection, like one might use \u201cPhew!\u201d in English, though it can also be used as an adjective that retains the meaning of \u201ccrazy\u201d or \u201cawesome\u201d. <\/span>Un truc de ouf<\/span><\/i> is one of the most common ways it\u2019s used!<\/span><\/p>\n

On a fait un truc de ouf ce week-end!<\/span><\/i> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nWe did something crazy awesome this weekend!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u00catre v\u00e9n\u00e8re<\/b><\/h3>\n

V\u00e9n\u00e8re <\/span><\/i>is the word <\/span>\u00e9nerv\u00e9<\/span><\/i> (\u201cannoyed\u201d) in verlan. You can use it exactly the same way you would its standard equivalent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Je suis v\u00e9n\u00e8re \u00e0 cause de ce que t\u2019as dit hier.<\/span><\/i>
\nI\u2019m bothered by what you said yesterday.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Relou<\/b><\/h3>\n

Relou<\/span><\/i> is the verlan for <\/span>lourd<\/span><\/i> (\u201cheavy\u201d) and the equivalent of <\/span>p\u00e9nible <\/span><\/i>(\u201cannoying\u201d or \u201cbothersome\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

C\u2019est trop relou, \u00e7a!<\/span><\/i> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nThat\u2019s so annoying!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Laisse b\u00e9ton<\/b><\/h3>\n

Laisse b\u00e9ton<\/span><\/i> is the equivalent of <\/span>laisse tomber <\/span><\/i>(\u201clet it go\u201d) with <\/span>b\u00e9ton <\/span><\/i>being the verlan version of <\/span>tomber<\/span><\/i>. This expression has become such a standard in spoken French today that it\u2019s hardly even considered slang anymore \u2013 that\u2019s why you need to know it!<\/span><\/p>\n

Laisse b\u00e9ton, tu ne sais plus de quoi tu parles!<\/span><\/i>
\nLet it go, you don\u2019t even know what you\u2019re talking about!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Cimer<\/b><\/h3>\n

This one is easy but is sure to impress any native speakers you interact with \u2013 it\u2019s <\/span>merci<\/span><\/i> (\u201cthank you\u201d), but verlanis\u00e9! In fact, it\u2019s probably one of verlan\u2019s most iconic words.<\/span><\/p>\n

T\u2019es trop sympa, cimer!<\/span><\/i> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
