An acquaintance with any language starts with its alphabet. Russian is no different and that’s why it’s important to get yourself familiar with the Russian alphabet in the early stages of your language learning journey.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Russian writing system is based on the Cyrillic script, which looks like mumbo jumbo for an English speaker. However, you should not be scared. Some of the letters look the same as in English, and others sound similar or identical. <\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s consider how to learn the alphabet quickly and how to memorize it.<\/span>

Quick facts about the Russian alphabet<\/b><\/h2>\n

\nThe alphabet has 33 letters out of which<\/span>
\n– 10 are vowels (\u0430, \u043e, \u0443, \u0438, \u0435, \u0451, \u044d, \u044e, \u044f, \u044b)<\/span>
\n– 21 are consonants (\u0431, \u0432, \u0433, \u0434, \u0436, \u0437, \u0439,\u043a, \u043b, \u043c, \u043d, \u043f, \u0440, \u0441, \u0442, \u0444, \u0445, \u0446, \u0447, \u0448, \u0449)<\/span>
\n– 2 are signs (\u044c \u2013 the soft sign and \u044a \u2013 the hard sign). These letters do not designate any sound<\/span>
\nThe first Cyrillic writing system appeared in the second half of the ninth century. It was created by Cyril, a Byzantine scholar and monk, and his brother Methodius.<\/span><\/p>\n

The script stems from Greek writing. That\u2019s why some of the letters resemble Greek symbols.<\/span><\/p>\n

The civil Russian alphabet was introduced in the 17<\/span>th<\/span> century by Peter the Great, and before that Church Slavonic was the only written language in Russia.<\/span>

Why is it hard to learn the Russian alphabet?<\/b><\/h2>\n

First and foremost, the Russian alphabet contains symbols that are not present in the Latin alphabet.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also has some letters that look like Latin symbols but in fact denote different sounds (i.e., the Cyrillic <\/span>H<\/b> stands for the Roman <\/span>N<\/b>, and the <\/span>P <\/b>stands for the Latin <\/span>R<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Russian writing is not easy to master as instead of block letters people use handwriting, which differs from the printed versions of the letters.<\/span><\/p>\n

How can one quickly memorize the Russian symbols?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Lots of exposure to the symbols of the Russian alphabet is key. You can learn Russian online<\/a> by finding lessons to suit your interests in the LingQ library. \nThe Russian alphabet is an absolute must on your path of learning the language. Once you have mastered it, you will start to be able to read and write a few Russian phrases. Eventually you may find yourself reading novels and watching movies in Russian<\/p>\n

Do not be discouraged by a set of symbols that might appear confusing at first. With a bit of time and effort, you will learn the alphabet and will see that it\u2019s not as difficult as it seems.<\/p>\n
