Let\u2019s take a look at the future simple tense in English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll read many interesting things here today.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s going to be a lot of talk about the future.<br \/>\nWe\u2019re most likely going to have a ton of fun!<br \/>\nFor now, I\u2019ll do all the talking, so sit back, relax, and pay attention.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice how all of the sentences above refer to events in the future. However, that\u2019s only one part of the equation. What I want you to focus on the most is the usage of \u201cwill\u201d and \u201cbe going to\u201d, as these two are actually the key to understanding the future simple tense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>P.S. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s nothing hard about this, so don\u2019t worry just yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>First Off, When Do We Use the Future Simple Tense?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer to this question is pretty obvious: we use the future simple tense to talk about future events. However, there\u2019s one question here that I always like to ask my students, as it really gets them thinking about the future tense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When exactly does the future \u201coccur\u201d?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it just the moments following the sentence in the future simple, or does it perhaps have to be a much longer period of time for us to refer to it as \u201cthe future\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some examples of just what I mean:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Oh, no! I dropped my pen!<br \/>\nDon\u2019t worry, I\u2019ll help you! (moments or seconds after)<br \/>\nIt looks like it\u2019s going to rain. (hours after)<br \/>\nI\u2019m going to the movies on Saturday night. (days after)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these sentences refer to future events, even though in some, the future is very near while in others, it\u2019s still a bit far away. In essence, the exact moment of when an action occurs in the future doesn\u2019t matter, as long as it happens in a moment that we still have to live to see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Long story short:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the future is the future, regardless of whether it\u2019s just one second or one century ahead of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re going to address the more specific use cases of the future simple tense later in this article.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLn7iYKq-G3PJHbixYlgvjO7pNg4qMp6c7\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176600328 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/English_Blog-Banner2-1024x288.jpg\" alt=\"Learn English with the LingQ podcast\" width=\"870\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/English_Blog-Banner2-1024x288.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/English_Blog-Banner2-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/English_Blog-Banner2-768x216.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/English_Blog-Banner2-600x169.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/English_Blog-Banner2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>How Do We Form the Future Simple Tense?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two ways to form a sentence in the future simple tense, either with the usage of \u201cwill\u201d or the various forms of \u201cbe going to\u201d before the main verb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best thing about it: there are no suffixes to be added or irregular verb forms to be used. It\u2019s all very simple. You just add the base form of the main verb after either \u201cwill\u201d or \u201cbe going to\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can also use the verb \u201cshall\u201d before the main verb in the future simple tense, but it\u2019s slightly less prevalent in everyday use than \u201cwill\u201d and \u201cbe going to\u201d. Here are some examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Affirmative Sentences:<br \/>\n<i>I will have some coffee, please. <\/i><br \/>\n<i>We are going to see a movie.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Negative Sentences:<br \/>\n<i>I will not get an A+ on this test.<\/i><br \/>\n<i>She is going to buy that!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Interrogative Sentences (Questions):<br \/>\n<i>Will you go out on a date with me?<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Are you going to pick the phone up?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Note: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can also use the shortened verb forms in all of the sentences above, except for the questions.<\/span><br \/>\n<i>I\u2019ll have some coffee, please.<\/i><br \/>\n<i>We\u2019re going to see a movie.<\/i><br \/>\n<i>I won\u2019t get an A+ on this test.<\/i><br \/>\n<i>She\u2019s going to buy that!<\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>So, What Is the Difference Between \u201cWill\u201d and \u201cBe Going to\u201d?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where we\u2019re going to address the specific use cases of the future simple tense, as it relates to \u201cwill\u201d and \u201cbe going to\u201d. Now, most English learners might think it\u2019s okay to use these two interchangeably but they actually share quite a lot of differences if we dig deeper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, let\u2019s take a look at how exactly they\u2019re different.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We use \u201cwill\u201d in the future simple tense to talk about:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rapid decisions or actions happening in an instant<br \/>\n<i>Oh, I\u2019m so hungry! I\u2019ll get two hamburgers.<\/i><br \/>\n<i>If you give me a hug, I\u2019ll give you my number.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Offers<br \/>\n<i>Will you marry me?<\/i><br \/>\n<i>That looks pretty hard. I\u2019ll help you with it.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Promises or threats<br \/>\n<i>If you don\u2019t apologize right now, I\u2019ll tell mom you did this!<\/i><br \/>\n<i>You can tell me. I swear I won\u2019t tell a single soul.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Refusals<br \/>\n<i>We\u2019ve tried everything. She just won\u2019t do it!<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Trust me. Do this and he won\u2019t stand a chance!<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Orders<br \/>\n<i>You will do exactly as I say, alright?!<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Alright, guys. You will do this test for 40 minutes.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let us now take a look at the specific use cases of \u201cbe going to\u201d in the future simple tense. We can use it to talk about:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Plans<br \/>\nI\u2019m going to the movies with my friends later today.<\/p>\n<p>My family\u2019s going to Paris next month.<br \/>\nObvious outcomes (based on current evidence, signs or facts)<br \/>\nPfff\u2026 they\u2019re already down 20 points. They\u2019re going to lose!<br \/>\nMy God, it\u2019s so hot in here! I think I\u2019m going to pass out!<\/p>\n<p><b>Note: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both \u201cwill\u201d and \u201cgoing to\u201d can be used to make predictions for the future, as well. However, \u201cbe going to\u201d has more certainty in it. In other words, you should only use \u201cwill\u201d if you\u2019re making a prediction based on a personal hunch or feeling and use \u201cbe going to\u201d if there are actual facts in the present that support your prediction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<br \/>\n<i>I think I\u2019ll stay home. It\u2019ll probably rain tomorrow.<\/i><i>I\u2019ve just watched the weather forecast.
