Numbers are the basis of a variety of different ways to communicate. If you just opted to learn Spanish, that information doesn&#8217;t change\u2014you should still start with the numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are important even if you are going around in the city. You need to understand and learn how to talk about prices, about road numbers, how many minutes, how many orders do you want, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, learning numbers in Spanish doesn&#8217;t have to be a big overwhelming task. I have put this guide together to help you through the basics of learning numbers in Spanish, or rather, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">los numeros en espa\u00f1ol.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of just learning all the numbers and memorizing them one by one, look for patterns in counting, just as there is in English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This guide will help you understand the patterns better, take a look \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Recognizing Patterns<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, learn all the numbers, from one to fifteen:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1: uno<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2: dos<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3: tres<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4: cuatro<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5: cinco<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6: seis<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7: siete<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8: ocho<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9: nueve<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10: diez<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11: once<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12: doce<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13: trece<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14: catorce<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15: quince<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have these down, move on to the numbers that are multiples of ten. Simple enough to remember, except for twenty, which is \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veinte<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, they all end in &#8211;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are also, all except \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veinte<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d again, related to the numbers one through ten to their corresponding sequence:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20: veinte<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30: treinta<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40: cuarenta<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50: cincuenta<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60: sesenta<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70: setenta<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80: ochenta<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90: noventa<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From sixteen onward, all you have to do is combine the numbers with a \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (pronounced \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the middle, and you\u2019ve done it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, from 16-19, it is ten and six, ten and seven, ten and eight, and finally, ten and nine. In Spanish, these will be pronounced:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16: \u201cdiez + y + seis\u201d: diecis\u00e9is<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17: \u201cdiez + y + siete\u201d: diecisiete<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18: \u201cdiez + y + ocho\u201d: dieciocho<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19: \u201cdiez + y + nueve\u201d: diecinueve<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving forward, when talking about the \u201ctens\u201d numbers, you also just combine the multiples of ten words we just learned than combine them with the \u201cones\u201d numbers, adding the \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(pronounced \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) again in the middle. In Spanish, these will be pronounced: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31: treinta y uno<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41: cuarenta y dos<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">51: cincuenta y tres<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVeinte\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the only exception in the fact that it takes off the ending of the word, adds an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ci\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and smashes it all together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cveinte + y + uno\u201d: veintiuno<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cveinte + y + dos\u201d: veintid\u00f3s<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you have 1-99, all you need to add is the numbers zero and one hundred.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Spanish, they are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0: cero<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100: cien<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you have the basics of zero to one hundred.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLn7iYKq-G3PLmzcM5OvFF2auJ4WUrxhuk\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176600605 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg\" alt=\"Learn Spanish with the LingQ podcast\" width=\"870\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1-768x216.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1-600x169.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Hundreds of Spanish Numbers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to move on to larger numbers over one hundred, the concepts stay the same, it\u2019s just the numbers that come before are different. For example, if you were to say 101, you would combine what you just learned and add it after \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ciento<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">101: ciento uno<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">125: ciento veinticinco<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">163: ciento sesenta y tres.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that you are not adding a \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in between one hundred and the one or the twenty-five. You say it fluidly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since we\u2019re working on the hundreds, I might as well introduce you to the other counts of one hundred. They are basically the original number with \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cientos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d added to it, with the exception of 500, 700, and 900. Here are the hundreds in Spanish:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">200: doscientos<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300: trescientos<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">400: cuatrocientos<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500: quinientos<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">600: seiscientos<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">700: setecientos<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">800: ochocientos<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">900: novecientos<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you have the basics. You can work with all the numbers up to one thousand, which is \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, by the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-spanish-online\/?utm_source=LingQ Blog&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=blogpost&amp;utm_content=OurGuidetoSpanishNumbers\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176597787 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png\" alt=\"Learn Spanish online on LingQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>One Thousand and More<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With \u201cone thousand\u201d, you have to remember that you don\u2019t use \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">un mil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, opposed to when you talk about \u201cone million\u201d, where you use \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">un mill\u00f3n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few examples of bigger numbers:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,000: mil<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20,000: veinte mil<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100,000: cien mil<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,000,000: un mill\u00f3n<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3,000,000: tres millones<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, what sets Spanish apart from numbers in English is the way they are written down. In a math class in Honduras, you might be a little confused as to why there are decimal points or commas in places where you normally wouldn&#8217;t see them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Decimals and Commas<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In English, you normally use <\/span><b>commas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to break up several thousands or millions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, instead of \u201c4352873\u201d, you would write: \u201c4,352,873\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in English, you would normally use<\/span><b> decimal points <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to break up partial numbers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, you would write: \u201c1.33\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Spanish, however, it\u2019s quite literally the opposite. You use <\/span><b>decimal points<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to break up large numbers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, instead of \u201c4,352,873\u201d, you would write: \u201c4.352.873\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some countries even use <\/span><b>spaces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of where we use commas. So it would be: \u201c4 352 873\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Spanish, when breaking up partial numbers, you use <\/span><b>commas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, our English \u201c1.33\u201d becomes \u201c1,33\u201d. Which you&#8217;ll probably see a lot of it you are shopping and looking at prices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just for fun, if you ever do talk about large numbers in Spanish, here are the big guys:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">un mill\u00f3n = one million = 1,000,000<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">un millardo (or \u201cmil millones\u201d) = one billion = 1,000,000,000<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">un bill\u00f3n = one trillion = 1,000,000,000,000<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mil billones = one quadrillion = 1,000,000,000,000,000<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">un trill\u00f3n = one quintillion = 1,000,000,000,000,000,000<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>Spanish numbers in context<\/h2>\n<p>If you want go a step further while studying Spanish, check out LingQ!<\/p>\n<p>LingQ lets you learn from content you love, which is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-spanish-online\/\">best ways to learn Spanish<\/a>!
