Images from the countries\/regions, food, people, etc.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-spanish-online\/\">learning Spanish<\/a> for the first time or have been hearing it all your life and have yet to be able to distinguish it, differentiating between accents from various Spanish-speaking countries is very difficult but with a little practice \u2014 it can be done!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are learning Spanish, the last thing you&#8217;ll want is to be called a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gringo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of your accent. Part of the learning process is to be able to best imitate the accent as much as possible. For example, all your dedication to learning the Spanish language might be for nothing if you go a Spanish-speaking country and you don\u2019t understand a word. Eventually, you&#8217;ll probably get used to the accent, but it\u2019s better to know beforehand what you&#8217;ll be getting yourself into.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, I\u2019m going to introduce some of the major Spanish accents.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where do people speak Spanish?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All over the world, actually. In whatever list you research, Spanish is usually placed high, in the top three most popular languages spoken throughout the world. Chances are, it\u2019s being taught in their schools to their children and printed in small print on labels all across the world. It\u2019s a handy language to know if you because based on the facts, if someone doesn&#8217;t speak English, your next best bet is Spanish. Well, actually the last of the top three languages is Chinese but that\u2019s not exactly elementary school learning to pick that language up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countries range from all over South America (aside from Brazil, of course), most of Central America, Spain, and the Caribbean. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLn7iYKq-G3PLmzcM5OvFF2auJ4WUrxhuk\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176600605 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg\" alt=\"Learn Spanish with the LingQ podcast\" width=\"870\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1-1024x288.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1-768x216.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1-600x169.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Spanish_Blog-Banner-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2><b>How to Recognize Different Spanish Accents<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When traveling or venturing from one Spanish-speaking country to the next, the Spanish speakers differ from one another with three different aspects: pronunciation, emphasis on certain parts of the words, and they often have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2015\/05\/05\/spanish-idioms-meanings-connotations\/\">different words for certain terms and expressions.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now we get to the main attraction, differentiating between various Spanish accents. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Castilian<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590430 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Spain.jpg\" alt=\"Spanish Accents From Around the World\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Spain.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Spain-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Spain-600x257.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venturing on over to Spain, you&#8217;ll notice right away an instant difference. One of the main differences in Castillian is the beginning of the word. As I have played in Portugal with half of my teammates being from Spain the pronunciation of the beginning of these words were easy to pick up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the beginning of words with a C or even Z, you&#8217;ll notice that Spaniards pronounce it like a \u201cTH\u201d. For example, instead of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ciudad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 \u201csee-oo-DAHD\u201d, \u00a0it is \u201cthee-oo-DAHD\u201d. S is also spoken as a \u201csh\u201d. In this dialect there are other differences in the accents but so little time! Those are the two main ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><br \/>\nMexican<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590426 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Mexico.jpg\" alt=\"Spanish Accents From Around the World\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Mexico.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Mexico-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Mexico-600x257.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most commonly spoken in the southwestern U.S., and of course, in Mexico, Mexican Spanish is highly influenced by their indigenous languages and surprisingly, American English. Mexican Spanish speakers use shorter vowels in speaking, as they talk with a sing-song voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the letters \u201cB\u201d and \u201cV\u201d are mostly pronounced as a \u201cB\u201d would in English. Also when speaking Spanish, as I mentioned before, the characteristic melody of the way Mexicans speak is that they often pronounce the stress on the second syllable in many words. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Argentinian<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590421 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Argentina.jpg\" alt=\"Spanish Accents From Around the World\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Argentina.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Argentina-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Argentina-600x257.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living with an Argentinian, I was able to pick up a few things without even realizing it from the way she speaks. (You can imagine how that was\u2014a Brazilian and an Argentinian on a soccer team living together\u2014talk about rivalry!) Fortunately, she grew to be one of my closest friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porte\u00f1o or Argentine Spanish is a lot softer. When it comes to the accents, \u201cy\u201d sounds like \u201csh\u201d, for example: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tuyo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> become \u201ctusho\u201d, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cca-ye\u201d) becomes \u201ccashe\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, something notable, they normally don&#8217;t use the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t\u00fa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for you, they use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning that the verb conjugation changes slightly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Caribbean &amp; Coastal Latin America<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590425 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Cuba.jpg\" alt=\"Spanish Accents From Around the World\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Cuba.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Cuba-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Cuba-600x257.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dawned some inspiration from Camila Cabello\u2019s \u201cHavana\u201d and are heading down to Cuba this summer? Be prepared to hear some of these differences in a Caribbean Spanish accent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Caribbean, speakers tend to drop the end of the two like \u201cd\u201d, \u201ct\u201d, and \u201cs\u201d. For example, in words like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verdad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mitad, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cubans will pronounce it like \u201cverda\u201d and \u201cmita\u201d. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gracias<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also becomes \u201cgracia\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these Spanish-speaking countries, you can also get confused by the \u201cr\u201d and \u201cl\u201d. In words containing these two letters, Caribbean speakers don\u2019t make much distinction between the two. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cerdo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is commonly pronounced <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celdo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which loosely means that the word for \u201cpig\u201d becomes \u201ccell\u201d\u2014which seems pretty harmless. However, when the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alma, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meaning \u201csoul\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is pronounced <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arma,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which means weapon or gun, you can see how things can get a bit complicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Colombian<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590424 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Colombia.jpg\" alt=\"Spanish Accents From Around the World\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Colombia.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Colombia-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Colombia-600x257.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colombian Spanish tends to use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usted <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instead of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t\u00fa,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and from an accent standpoint, they often eat their letters \u2014 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They don\u2019t like to pronounce their \u201cb\u201d and \u201cd\u201d either, which can be pretty confusing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, when saying <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sentada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they say \u201csenta-a\u201d and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cansado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> becomes \u201ccansa-o\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Colombia, they also do not distinguish between \u201cy\u201d and \u201cll\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Peruvian<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590429 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Peru-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Spanish Accents From Around the World\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Peru-1-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Peru-1-1-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Peru-1-1-600x257.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peruvians place emphasis on the \u201cs\u201d when pronouncing and most often my favorite type of Spanish (my grandfather was from Peru so I might be a little biased) because they speak clearly. They also tend to use the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pues <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quite often.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the only differences is that they sometimes pronounce the letter \u201cd\u201d like a \u201ct\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Chilean<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176590422 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Chile-1.jpg\" alt=\"Spanish Accents From Around the World\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Chile-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Chile-1-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Chile-1-600x257.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Chile, their accent also has a lot of dropping of letters, as well. Most words that end in a vowel, they lose the letter \u201cd\u201d. They also lose the \u201cv\u201d when the word ends in &#8211;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">v\u00f3n.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Chileans speak, they also pronounce \u201cch\u201d with a \u201csh\u201d sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Picking the right Spanish accent for you to learn is mainly based on what type of Spanish you want to be speaking or which one will be the most useful for you. Before you dive headfirst into one of the dialects, do your research beforehand and see if the choice will best benefit you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The best way to get used to the different Spanish accents is by doing a lot of listening.
