As a Russian learner you will come across some words that are hard to translate. Perhaps there isn’t an equivalent word or the translation requires a couple of words in English. Here is a list of nine Russian words that do not have an English equivalent.<\/span><\/p>\n

This word is used to describe a person who asks a lot \u2018<\/span>\u043f\u043e\u0447\u0435\u043c\u0443?\u2019[pochimu] \u2013 why? Most often it refers to young children who are curious and ask a lot of questions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u0423\u0441\u043f\u0435\u0432<\/b>\u0430<\/b>\u0442\u044c<\/b> [uspiv<\/span>a<\/span>t\u2019] (verb) <\/span><\/h3>\n

Mayhem would be the closest English equivalent, however, it does not describe the depth of this Russian word, which also means lawlessness, complete disorder and actions that go beyond any laws and moral principles:<\/span>

This word has many aspects and means melancholy, craving, nostalgia for something that has happened and will not repeat or missing someone you love dearly. In other words, there is more to this word than sadness:<\/span>

Now let’s take a look at some English words that you won’t find a direct translation for in Russian.<\/p>\n

Grandparents <\/b><\/h3>\n

Just like with the word \u2018siblings\u2019, in Russian you can only say \u2018<\/span>\u0434<\/b>\u0435<\/b>\u0434\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0430\u2019 <\/b>[d<\/span>e<\/span>dushka] for grandfather and \u2018<\/span>\u0431<\/b>\u0430<\/b>\u0431\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0430<\/b>\u2019 [b<\/span>a<\/span>bushka] for grandmother.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thirsty<\/b><\/h3>\n

Although this word is translated into Russian as \u2018<\/span>\u0436<\/b>\u0430<\/b>\u0436\u0434\u0443\u0449\u0438<\/b>\u0439\u2019 [zh<\/span>a<\/span>zhdushchiy], you will never hear \u00a0this Russian word in everyday life. Instead of asking \u2018Are you thirsty?\u2019, native Russian speakers ask \u2018Do you want to drink?\u2019: \u2018<\/span>\u0422\u044b \u0445<\/b>\u043e<\/b>\u0447\u0435\u0448\u044c \u043f<\/b>\u0438<\/b>\u0442\u044c<\/b>?\u2019 [ty h<\/span>o<\/span>chesh’ pit’] or \u2018<\/span>\u0412\u044b \u0445\u043e\u0442<\/b>\u0438<\/b>\u0442\u0435 \u043f<\/b>\u0438<\/b>\u0442\u044c<\/b>?\u2019 [vy hot<\/span>i<\/span>te p<\/span>i<\/span>t\u2019] if addressing a few people\/using the polite form.<\/span><\/p>\n

Facilities <\/b><\/h2>\n

[<\/span>the buildings, equipment, and services provided for a particular purpose<\/span><\/i> as defined by Cambridge dictionary]<\/span>. <\/b>There is no Russian word that would contain all the shades of meaning of the word \u2018facilities\u2019. You can either translate it as \u2018equipment\u2019 \u2013 \u2018<\/span>\u043e\u0431\u043e\u0440<\/b>\u0443<\/b>\u0434\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435\u2019 <\/b>[obor<\/span>u<\/span>dovaniye], conveniences \u2013\u2018<\/span>\u0443\u0434<\/b>\u043e<\/b>\u0431\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430<\/b>\u2019[ud<\/span>o<\/span>bstva] or construction \u2013 \u2018<\/span>\u0441\u043e\u043e\u0440\u0443\u0436<\/b>\u0435<\/b>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/b>\u2019[sooruzh<\/span>e<\/span>niye] depending on the context.<\/span>

To describe this adjective in Russian you would have to use a combination of words \u2018<\/span>\u0442\u0440<\/b>\u0443<\/b>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/b>\u2019[tr<\/span>u<\/span>dnyj] \u2013 \u2018difficult\u2019 and \u2018<\/span>\u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440<\/b>\u0435<\/b>\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439\u2019 <\/b>[intir<\/span>e<\/span>snyj] \u2013 \u2018interesting\u2019<\/span>
\nSuch words as<\/span> \u2018earworm\u2019, \u2018jetlag\u2019 , \u2018tailgate(r)\u2019 <\/b>do not exist in Russian, and you would have to describe what each of them means if you wanted to talk about them in Russian.<\/span>
\nWords \u2018<\/span>click<\/b>\u2019 and \u2018<\/span>branch<\/b>\u2019 have been borrowed from English and are basically the same: \u2018\u043a\u043b\u0438\u043a\u2019 and \u2018\u0431\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0447\u2019, only spelt in Cyrillic.<\/span><\/p>\n
