It\u2019s this very moment of response that guides us from a state of active listening to active conversation, improving our English.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we\u2019re most often playing our part in a scenario where no response is required from us, such as listening to a lecture or a business presentation. It\u2019s when a simple head nod is all that we\u2019re allowed to do to respond. What I mean is even when you\u2019re passively listening, you must have a language learning target.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, you\u2019re listening to every single thing being said by a speaker in front of you.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is most effective when you\u2019re targeting specific words, phrases or idioms but it can also be applied to accent or pronunciation. Let\u2019s say you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/22\/movie-time\/\">watching a movie<\/a> or a TV show. Aren\u2019t you passively listening then?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By choosing an area or target to focus on, you can get a handle on the native-like English sound of it all much quicker without having to travel to an English-speaking country. It\u2019s actually self-immersion by isolating your target and \u201cactively focusing\u201d on it while \u201cpassively listening\u201d. Of course, this won\u2019t always be possible. When you\u2019re in a room full of people and everyone\u2019s whispering or clicking their pen, it can get pretty distracting.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XLgvSZ4LSJg&amp;list=PLFED4984055236DDE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">becoming great at learning languages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also requires you to constantly enhance your focus. Like I said previously, the key to passive listening is to not get distracted by all the things that don\u2019t really matter to you.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From my point of view, passive listening is like a comprehension exercise and focus is simply a must. However, body language is a very important aspect of mastering English that can\u2019t be omitted. In other words, it\u2019s not just about your ability to speak a language but how well you can communicate with others. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see, there is a huge difference between how a language is written and how it is spoken. In writing, we are actively engaged in a conversation but we rely on our sentence phrasing or even emojis, in the case of social media, to show our connection, interest or emotions to our conversation partner.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While speaking, we do the same thing with body language. However, passive listening doesn\u2019t allow us to do any of that. Nonetheless, you can still be part of the conversation\u2026 passively.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By simply leaning in, you\u2019re showing others that you are engaged in the conversation, even if you aren\u2019t responding verbally. Moreover, you\u2019re putting the speaker at ease by making them feel appreciated and relaxed \u2013 something that can\u2019t be accomplished that easily by just words.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important thing to note here is that<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/06\/improve-language-skills\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improving your communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will probably lead to better relationships in your life. Just because you\u2019re not required or allowed to verbally respond to what you\u2019re listening to doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t jot down notes of what you consider highly important.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By this, I don\u2019t mean writing down a summary of \u201ceverything\u201d that you hear. That\u2019s not the way to go if you want to learn better English. Note-taking through passive listening is the most effective when you\u2019re writing down only the things that matter to you most.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can extract specific English words, expressions or pointers that are the most interesting to you from what you listen to, just write them down. This means that you&#8217;ve already recognized the potential of those things for yourself, their real-life implementation, and you\u2019re merely saving them for later. You can then add these words and phrases to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/20\/reviewing-vocabulary\/\">vocabulary on LingQ<\/a>, or if they&#8217;re in your list already, move them one step closer to known!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, if you already know what you\u2019re looking for, the more beneficial it becomes. By having the chance to literally pick out what you want to learn by yourself, you\u2019re putting your mind at ease to memorize and master new things a lot faster.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially, you\u2019re creating new learning opportunities on the fly. Yeah, right\u2026<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything above proves that regardless of whether you\u2019re actively or passively listening, you can still analyze, evaluate, and infer things without \u201cspeaking your mind\u201d completely.
