Having such higher goals often means that the English learner is bound to find things within the language itself that aren\u2019t so easy to learn. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few examples of just how hard learning the English language can get.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Tricky Grammar<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176481987 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/person_studying.jpeg\" alt=\"Is English Hard to Learn?\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/person_studying.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/person_studying-300x129.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/person_studying-600x257.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s consider the following example: <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe dog I had had had had quite a few health difficulties before I took it to the vet.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may seem as though someone accidentally copy-pasted the word \u201chad\u201d too many times, but this sentence is actually 100% grammatically correct\u2013it makes total sense.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is due to the wide variety of tenses in the English language. In fact, if we counted all of the English conditionals (regular and mixed) as well as the subjunctive along with all other \u201cregular\u201d tenses, the total number of tenses in English would be around 20. Yes, 20\u2026 I know, right?!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, if we add the passive voice into the mix, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.thelinguist.com\/english-grammar-101\">the road to mastering English grammar<\/a> definitely becomes an extremely long one.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not to say that learning about all of these tenses is hard. This is to say that it\u2019s not that easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/learn-english-online\/?utm_source=LingQ Blog&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_campaign=blogpost&amp;utm_content=IsEnglishHardtoLearn?\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176597787 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png\" alt=\"Learn English online at LingQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl.png 700w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/lingq-girl-600x257.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Game of Words<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The feature of English that most learners probably find the easiest to grasp is its plural. All they need to do is add an \u201cs\u201d at the end of any word and they\u2019re good to go. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are, however, some words in English that don\u2019t necessarily follow this same structure, e.g. the plural \u201cmen\u201d for \u201cman\u201d or \u201cwomen\u201d for \u201cwoman\u201d. Actually, \u201csome\u201d is not the word I\u2019d use here. It\u2019s way more than that\u2013hundreds of words, to be exact. However, this is a topic for another time. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I want to focus on is just how big of a difference small pronunciation variations in English, in general, can make. Consider the following examples: \u201cpan\u201d vs. \u201cpen\u201d, \u201csand\u201d vs \u201csend\u201d, \u201csheet\u201d vs. oops! That\u2019s exactly what I mean! The differences between \u201ca\u201d, \u201ce\u201d, and their inbetweener vowel sound <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.stackexchange.com\/questions\/70927\/how-is-%C3%A6-supposed-to-be-pronounced\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e6\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a long and short vowel can be devastating for the average English learner in so many real-world scenarios. It\u2019s something that requires a fair amount of practice and the utmost attention to detail.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This just goes to show that there are so many ways for you to sound wrong in English, and there\u2019s nothing easy about that.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Rules of Writing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, there are some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/blog\/2016\/12\/08\/common-mistakes-english-even-native-speakers-make\/\">common English mistakes<\/a> even native speakers\u00a0make, particularly the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lingq.com\/en\/grammar-resource\/english\/punctuation\/?utm_source=LingQ Blog&amp;utm_medium=anchor text&amp;utm_campaign=blogpost&amp;utm_content=IsEnglishHardtoLearn?\">rules of punctuation<\/a>. Oh my, oh my\u2026 People may learn how to speak, read, listen, and even write, but it is this stylistic part of writing that causes the most headaches. Whether it\u2019s the everlasting Oxford Comma or the use of hyphens in compound nouns. I\u2019d say that it is this area of English that requires the most learning effort out of all four language skills. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also the curious case of the English pronoun \u201cI\u201d. If we compare it to all the other English pronouns, regardless of their type, we can notice that \u201cI\u201d is the only one that\u2019s written in uppercase. I mean, why?!
