Why Spanish Blogs are Great Resources to Help You Learn

As a new learner, it is important to choose content wisely. When I began to learn Spanish, I watched programs on television. Although I did get good exposure to the new language, I felt confused and left behind. As the television characters moved between topics, I became lost in a sea of unknown vocabulary. Ultimately, I felt over my head and unmotivated to continue learning.

However, other Spanish content is beginner-friendly. Spanish blog posts are usually centered around one topic. Therefore, the reader knows most everything will relate to this topic in some way. When I made the switch to reading Blog posts, I took the time to highlight and look up words I did not understand, and therefore had improved comprehension overall. I found this to be one of the best ways to learn Spanish!

A great Spanish blog for beginners is hosted by a Spanish-speaking duo on the website Spanish Obsessed. These videos are great for those interested in blogs related to travel and more lesson oriented videos.

Discover new vocabulary

That brings me to my next point…. learning new words! When I finished my Study Abroad program and was back in the USA, I was no longer surrounded by the Spanish language. I was so afraid that I was going to forget what I had worked so hard to learn all those months abroad. So, I had to find creative ways to continue practicing and learning new content. 

Blog posts can be about a variety of different topics, and usually include topics and words that are not covered in general Spanish textbooks. Blog posts provided me with the exposure I needed to keep practicing Spanish and build on my knowledge. I highly recommend keeping track of new words while reading blogs, as these words could pop up again in conversation!

Improve your conversation skills

Have you ever felt stuck while having a conversation in Spanish? I certainly have. It happened after I had the basic “Hola ¿Como está usted?” down pat, but had run out of other things to say or ask.
 
Blogs may not directly address conversational skills; however, they do provide interesting information. This information can become a great topic to bring up during conversation. Soon you’ll be saying “Recientamente leí un tema interesante en una publicación de un blog en español”.

Explaining newly learned vocabulary promotes recall, and it helped me gain more confidence with new words.

Spanish blogs come in all topics

What is my fourth reason for recommending Spanish Blogs you may ask? Well, no matter how great the textbook, it is impossible for one book to encompass topics that interest everyone. However, on the internet I have found Blog posts about so many different and interesting topics! 

I realized that I am much more motivated to learn when I am intrigued by what I am reading. 

So, I thought, why not study more of what I love? Most of the kitchen vocabulary I have learned has been from reading blog posts about cooking and recipes in Spanish.  

Perhaps you are a sports lover? The Spanish blog TresCuatroTres is all about fútbol, and as the content demonstrates, the writers have a real passion for the game.
