New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions

Many people ridicule New Year’s Resolutions and it always makes me wonder why they do so. Obviously, you can’t expect yourself to change overnight, but to my mind resolutions are not about that at all. Personally, I treat each New Year’s Day as a perfect opportunity to start something anew. Alternatively, you could just sit and do nothing. What small change could you make in your everyday life that would make you happier in the long run?

Gretchen Rubin, the author of the “Happiness Project”, has recently posted on her blog a few useful tips you should bear in mind if you want to succeed with your resolutions. If you have no idea what resolutions you could make, try asking yourself – what would make me happier and more satisfied with everyday life? Or maybe there is something that often makes you feel unhappy or guilty? What would be a specific action you could take regularly (preferably each day, because then it’s easier to hold yourself accountable) to make a desired change? Start with something small and specific enough (like “read a book in German for 15 minutes a day”) and remember to remind yourself of your new resolution every single day because it takes time until it becomes a habit! If all goes well, you’ll be able to see a difference in your extent of happiness after a month. If you don’t succeed or if you feel you could do better – don’t despair! The 1st of February is as good to make a new change. Off you go!
