Changes to the Writing Correction System

We have had quite a bit of discussion lately about our writing correction system and Steve sent out his tips on writing a few days ago. In addition we have made a few changes to the writing system itself. First of all, we have tried to simplify the mistake types. From now on, our correctors will choose from the following six mistake types: verb, singular/plural, article, preposition, choice of words and other. We will still use some of the previous mistake types in special situations but in those cases your tutor will explain why these terms were used and what they refer to.
In addition to the new mistake types we have changed the notes on the Writing Correction Report. The previous four notes have been replaced with the following six notes:
1. Read your corrected writing aloud many times. These are your thoughts expressed in correct, natural English.
2. Accept all corrections for what they are – a chance to improve your language.
3. Make sure to save the suggested natural phrases for later review.
4. We will not correct spelling mistakes. Please use the spellchecker provided
5. As a general rule, we do not recommend using contractions in writing.
6. Please take the time to read Steve’s Tips on Writing in the Language section of the Linguist Library.
These outline our basic strategy with the writing correction. If you have any questions ever on your writing correction reports, just let your tutor know. Let us know how you like the changes!
