Is it possible to pay with a debit card for a basic membership, but without PayPal ?

No, it isn't. However, paying through PayPal is fairly straightforward as anyone can create an account.

You have to be over 18 (in the UK anyway).

Ah, I see. Would your parents be able to create an account for you? I imagine you should still be able to use your own debit card. If not, you could strike a deal with them to pay them back every month :)

In Japan, it is possible to create a PayPal account with a debit card. As for me, I use Paypal because I don't have a Credit card.

Just looked, I'm getting a Visa debit card. Will I be able to pay with that?

Yes, you can use a visa debit card to pay for membership. I did it a long time ago and it worked just fine. I went through Chase.
