Când ai fost

I am confused, this isn’t the first language I have studied and I know that things can be translated odd when translated literally. . . and I like to translate things literally in my head to understand a language better, but how does “Când ai fost” mean When did you go?

From what the lesson vocabulary says,
Când = When
Ai = you
Fost = Former

. . . Is it fine to say I don’t understand?

I just started to learn Romanian today, so this might be an obvious and easy question. . . mulțumesc!

Since you’re an experienced language learner, you realize that verbs in Romance languages change according to tense and person. A great place to go for verb conjugation in a number of languages is the website Verbix.

Here is the link for the verb “fi” (to be). “Fost” is the past participle.

Here, with the formatting messed up, is some of the information you will find there.

Ah, I’m not experienced in Romance languages (besides Latin), and yes I remember Latin very well, I just sort of jumped into the language with out reading grammar rules and conjugations :-). Romanian is really my first Romance language. I normally stay in the Slavic languages area, Polish, Greek, Serbian, Russian, Czech, Croatian, etc. . . Thanks Steve! :slight_smile:
