Good Morning. What means “quite a ways” in phrase “The airport in Halifax is quite a ways out of town”?

a long way

The airport in Halifax is quite a long way out of town
The airport in Halifax is quite far away from town

p.s. when you ask what something means, the correct way to phrase it would be ‘what does X mean?’ instead of ‘what means X?’

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that “quite a ways” is used by English-speakers in some countries, but not generally in Australia, the UK or South Africa. Most Australians would be much more likely to use one of the expressions suggested by Colin, particularly the first one.

I have no idea. I certainly would never use it.

It just means that it is far away. I live in America and I use it sometimes. It’s not too uncommon, but don’t worry about using it, it’s not necessary.
