"Farther" is supposed to be used for actual distance: I saw him waiting for me farther down the road. "Further" is supposed to be used for whatever is not literally physical: Without further argument he, he gave up and let me in. But they are so often confused nowadays that the distinction will probably disappear.
Furthermore, farther is used more often in US English, whereas in the UK we tend to use further for both 'farther' and 'further'. I hope I have not caused further confusion.
