When you "need" to learn a foreign language that you are not really passionated about.

I want and I need to learn Finnish. I want understand what people The Finns talk. I want get integrated in that country. I Want to be able to comunicate with people at the day care my son goe etc etc etc. However I like the language, I like many people, I have some Finnish good friends, my partner is Finnish. I love the country in many ways, I like the culture in many ways, but I'm not really passionated about The Finnish Language. I see some foreigners speaking Finnish I kind of get motivated and at the same time demotivated for some reasons: I have been living here around 4 years and before never studied the language, so now I'm still in a basic level, though improving. I don't know how long we will live here. It's not an easy language. There are few people who speak Finnish. It is not easy to get opportunities to speak Finnish most of the time people will talk to you in English, even my family and friends who know I want to learn their language. And the last reason I would like to improve my English and then learn Italian and French. What is your opinion? Thank you
Cultivate your motivations for learning the language.

Maybe focus on your son, and his learning, and day care? And how the language can assist you to have even more opportunities to be with him etc?

If you don't have a strong motivation it will always be hard...if you have strong motivation a big part of the learning process will fall into place.
I have gotten to quite a high level of comprehension in a language that I was not all that passionate about. The better you get at a language the more "passionate" you get about it and the more motivation you have to improve. It's like a snowball effect.
Jaing, I like your approach: Yes! Cultivate my motivation for learning the language. That is what I always try to do. And of course your interests keep changing during the process. Odiernod@ I agree with you mOre I learn Finnish more I feel like to learn. The snowball effect makes sense. Thanks
I agree with odiernod. If you put the effort into a language, and start to see some success, you will be more motivated. It helps to be interested in some aspect of the culture. But in the end if you are not interested, you will not learn very well.
Thanks Steve.
