IDIOMATIC AND SYNTACTIC ENGLISH DICTIONARY

This is a dictionary I bought recently. It was compiled by A. S. Hornby, E. V. Gatenby, and A. H. Wakefield.

It was first published in 1942. I bought the 25th printing of the original edition.

A. S. Hornby’s Advanced Learner’s Dictionary(OALD) was first published by Oxford University Press in 1948, six years after the publication of IDIOMATIC AND SYNTACTIC ENGLISH DICTIONARY in Japan.

Wow! =)))) So unusual to see ‘Dai jiten’ and a name of A.S. Hornby known ever since childhood! =))) Such an unexpected surprise, really! =)))

Well, with us the “first” locally printed edition of A.S. Hornby “Learner’s Dictionary” is as late as … 1983, I still have it ! Prior to that – none of locally printed Hornby, at all !!! Just the ones brought from abroad and sold only in the second-hand bookshop, not in every bookshop, just in the only one, specialized, in Moscow! =)))

“A S Hornby, an English language teacher in Japan, realized that learners needed a dictionary that addressed their needs. He wrote the first OALD using explanations students could understand, and pictures to help with difficult words.”
