What’s the difference between “il monte” and “la montagna”? Both seem to mean just “mountain”.

As for my understanding, il monte = a mountain, la montagna = upland = region with may mountains.
And where do they sing “La Montanara?”
“La Montanara, considerata uno dei più celebri canti di montagna, …”
So, they sing in “la montagna”, I guess.
I really don’t know.
I thought it over and I realized that I almost never use " monte " except before names of actual mountains but that’s all that I can say on the topic .
