I noticed in this lesson the word “portanto” is mentioned a lot. the lingq suggestion was that it means “therefore”, but im wondering in the most of these example it can also simply mean “so”.

In most cases “portanto” means “therefore”, for example in the following sentence:
A lei foi considerada inconstitucional, portanto deve ser revogada.
In that lesson, most of the times, in my opinion, the word has no meaning at all or is not corretly used.
As this is a conversation between 2 people probably there was not much concern with correction. Sometimes it seems the word is just used as a speech helper; there are people who keep repeating the same word, when they are speaking, for example the word “pronto”
This first sentence:
“No Parlamento Europeu, o Bloco de Esquerda é das forças mais presentes, portanto na Europa”
would be acceptable if written like this:
No Parlamento Europeu, e portanto na Europa, o Bloco de Esquerda é das forças mais presentes.
“portanto” sinónimos: Logo; por consequência; por isso; em vista disso.
