LingQ Forum

It looks like you are using an old version of Internet Explorer (IE6). We do our best to support IE6, but the site will work much better if you use a more up to date browser. We strongly recommend you upgrade to:
Question:Is this Continental or Brazilian Portuguese?

Have just joined LingQ for the second time, having been frustrated by the first version and by the lack of European Portuguese available. The announcement of the new version brought me back. It looks great on my computer but can not create lingqs in Safari on my iPad... I'm hoping that will be fixed.

Posting here to encourage "mfr" to add materials in Portuguese. That would be wonderful!!!! (Only three months until I travel in Portugal!) Thanks in advance.
@mfr - You can find out more about importing in the Import Help section: http://www.lingq.com/help/import/
This includes information about specifications, copyright, etc.

@MaryThomas2 - Glad to hear that you've rejoined us! Would you be able to explain what happens in Safari when you try to save a LingQ on your iPad?
Nothing... I touch the word I don't know and the definition popup comes up (slowly) to the right. I touch the definition I prefer and a little pencil icon instantly appears to the left of that definition. But then the word does not turn yellow and is not added to the total words I need to learn. Those words that I lingQ'd via my computer appear yellow on my iPad and are part of my total. Just can't add anything new via the iPad. (Touching a word and marking it as Learned works properly.) Thanks for looking into it!
Thanks for the additional info. We will spend some time looking into this and will let you know if we need any additional information!
@MaryThomas2 - I think I might now better understand what's going on. To save a hint, you will have to tap the hint twice in a row. The first time around it shows the "edit" pencil, allowing you to take that hint then edit it. The second time you tap it it will save your hint and the word should turn yellow.

If you're still having trouble with this, be sure to let us know!
Thanks! The hint window now pops up instantly and, yes, tapping twice (but not double tapping - that enlarges the screen) creates the lingQ. Now that I can work anywhere, it's time to upgrade my LingQ account! Thanks again.
Awesome, glad to hear you've got it figured out now! If you run into any other problems, leave a message on my wall or email us at support (at) lingq.com!
@alex
Thanks, Alex for reminding me of that help section. As a matter of fact I was struggling yesterday to share a lesson I had as private (no idea why) and managed to do it. It can now be seen here ( I hope): http://www.lingq.com/learn/pt/store/lesson/168418/

Another issue: I thought messages in these forums would be sent to my mail, but apparently, they don't, or am I missing something? I had no idea anyone had replied to me before I returned here today.
@mfr - Are you subscribed to this thread? You can check by seeing whether or not the box is ticked at the top left. Also, do you receive other emails from LingQ?
@mfr
Muito obrigada!! A sua lição nova está grande. Muito agradecendo.
@alex
No, I was not subscribed to this thread. It seems I still have a lot to learn about LingQ dynamics. Thanks for pointing it out to me. Yes, I receive other emails.
@MaryThomas2

De nada!
Se bem interpreto a sua resposta, a frase correta seria: A sua lição nova está ótima (great?) Muito agradecida.
Ótima, sim. Muito agradecida!! (Aprendo um pouco bocado cada vez. I am learning a little bit each time.)
@MaryThomas2
I am learning a little bit each time. - aprendo um bocadinho de cada vez.
Obrigada!
@Alex - "@mfr - Are you subscribed to this thread?"

Seems to me it would simplify things that posting to a thread would automatically subscribe me to it. I know that often I just forget to subscribe. Possible?

@donhamiltontx, @Alex
if technically possible, I agree it would simplify things, provided you were given the option of unsubscribing, if you wished.

"I would like to help with European Portuguese, but unfortunately for you I'm from Brazil. By the way,Why many people opt to learn European Portugues? Just a curiosity. Is it that European Portuguese have more privilege? Or is it that the Brazilian or " African" Portuguese have/use too much slangs, not accurate, sounds silly. I wonder why?"

Kind of a funny reason but this song is one of the main reasons for me:

(Hellfire from Hunchback of Notre Dame)

I could also see living in Germany in the future and that makes Portugal the closer Portuguese-speaking country.
I think Europeans are more likely to learn European Portuguese, whereas the people who live in South or North America are more likely to learn Brazilian Portuguese, unless you have a particular reason to learn this or that, like tourism or business.

Fernanda
I agree completely with Fernanda. Unless you have a particular affiliation for one Portuguese vs. another, I believe Europeans are far more likely to want to learn European Portuguese, while MOST of the rest of the world prefers to learn Brazilian. In the grand scheme of things, I think everyone should learn whichever one they prefer, but I ALSO think it's a good idea to familiarize one's self with the Portuguese you DON'T prefer as well, at least from an "I'm able to understand and communicate with someone with a different accent" standpoint. It was very difficult for me when I first became more or less fluent in Brazilian Portuguese, to understand someone from Portugal, and I still have more difficulties with this than with other accents from Brasil, BUT I can manage pretty well now. Just by choosing to learn one Portuguese or the other (or any variation in between) does NOT mean you should limit yourself ONLY to that one, IMHO. Preference should NOT equate to exclusivity. =)
