My problem is probably resulting from the word Vorabend. I thought this meant the previous evening and the sentence that follow it seems to me to be referring to “today’s events”. Where am I going wrong?

Your translation below is absolutely correct! (apart from the missing ‘ja’, which basically confirms the before-said in the German sentence (es war (ja) spaet geworden). No idea how to translate that into English.
