So I signed up for the site and purchased premium. I want to learn mandarin Chinese. I started with the first lesson, but I don’t know any characters. Can you learn the Chinese characters on this site? If not it just seems like a waste if I don’t understand any of the characters.

It is very possible to learn the characters here. With enough reading, you will recognize words more and more.
If you need extra help learning characters, you can use a site called Memrise. I use this site to help reinforce characters and also to learn new ones that I have never seen before.

Just listen a lot, and read the transcripts by putting them into pleco reader or mdbg reader etc.
